About the Item

"Cavaliers arabes aux murs de Marrakech" ("Arab Horsemen at the Walls of Marrakech”) Signed French Orientalist Oil Painting, Mattéo Brondy, c. 1915 Mattéo Brondy (1866-1944) Mattéo Brondy was winner of the National Veterinary School Medal in Alfort ("École nationale vétérinaire d’Alfort") in 1889, then entered the Cavalry School of Saumur, France. After studying at the Ecole Veterinaire, Mattéo Brandy turned to art and began his studies under Pierre Signal, Antoine Robert Fleurie and Jules Lefebvre. In 1893, Brondy served with the marine artillery for the campaign of Dahomey He returned to France in 1894. He entered the Académie Julian in Paris. He was then admitted to the workshop of Adolphe Dechenaud . His early works found great success, such as his animal studies, landscapes of Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Between 1906 and 1909, he resided in Italy, including Capri. Brandy then returned to Paris, where he exhibited at the "Salon des Artistes Independents," beginning in 1909. Matteo Brondy was sent to Morocco in 1915 as a military veterinarian during WW I, where he settled in Meknès, an imperial city in Morocco.. He participated in the armed expeditions in the Middle Atlas and the High Moulouya, northeast of Morocco. In 1918, Mattéo Brondy became the municipal veterinarian of Meknes. He continued his sketches and watercolors and oil paintings. The Berber hinterland of the city offered a great variety of landscapes: plains, mountains and springs, all illuminated by the Afro-Mediterranean light that many artists have tried to capture. Mattéo Brondy founded, with other French artists living in Morocco, an artistic company named the "Peintres et Sculpteurs du Maroc français" (Association of (French Painters and Sculptors of Morocco). Brondy's veterinarian training, knowledge of anatomy and animal behavior allowed him to draw horses with a sense of exquisite detail, such as seen here in He spent days working in the famous stud farm of Meknes. He painted watercolors near the market Bab el Khemis or that of Bab-Berdaine. He looked carefully at the architecture of the historic buildings. Brondy was president of the tourist office of the city of Meknes and thus the great animator of its tourism promotion. Mattéo Brondy’s also designed and executed many splendid posters of large graphic quality. These posters are not forgotten and continue to be published as postcards and used as book illustrations Mattéo Brondy’s paintings feature rapid strokes, clearly taken from his observations of real life, as seen here today in Cavaliers arabes aux murs de Marrakech. The feel of setting, "mis en scene," and localization are nothing short of superb. The viewer can feel the desert heat, hear the shouts and cries of the horsemen, and even feel the grit of the swirling red sands. "Cavaliers arabes aux murs de Marrakech" is simply a superb and exciting work of true Orientalism. The paintings of Matteo Brondy have frequently been offered by the world’s leading auction houses, including Christie’s, Sotheby’s and the like. "Reception du Quaid pendant un Moussem" sold for $49, 462.34 "Cavaliers arabes aux murs de Marrakech" measures 23 inches x 19 1/2 inches framed and 13 inches x 9 1/2 inches in massive antique gilt frame. "Cavaliers arabes aux murs de Marrakech" has just originated from a long-held private collection in the South of France. The concept of “Orientalism,” that of the mystery and exoticism of foreign lands, especially North Africa, Egypt, the Nile, and the Middle East, was a touchstone of French painting in the 18th and 19th Centuries. When Napoleon invaded and occupied Egypt in 1798, he brought with him not only soldiers, but also engineers, historians, and the leading intellectuals and artists of the day. They found in Egypt a land of mystery, strangeness, opulence and exoticism. The painters of the day, chiefly French, but also German, English and American, were delighted by the strange sights, sounds and smells and wasted no time in displaying their discoveries to a public at home who quickly became enamored with the concepts of “Orientalism.” Architecture, decorative tastes, furniture and even clothing styles were quickly influenced in France, and to a lesser extent, in England and America. There were many French, European, English and even American painters who spent time in North Africa during the height of this craze for all things exotic. Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863); Leon Belly (1827-1877); Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904); Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928); Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829-1900); John Singer Sargent (1856-1925); Edwin Lord Weeks (1849-1903); Carl Haag (1820-1915); Edouard Debat-Ponsan (1847-1913); Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860), etc., were just a few of those influenced by the Orientalist Movement. The movement waned a bit at the beginning of the 20th Century, but still many painters continued to remain fascinated, such as August Renoir, Henri Matisse, etc. In recent times, Orientalist paintings have been rediscovered by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, and these exotic works are increasingly and avidly sought. Orientalist paintings are frequently featured at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, and are widely displayed at the Louve, the Metropolitan Museum, and leading institutions worldwide.
