Drawing on the visual traditions of German Expressionist painters including Otto Dix and George Grosz, Melora Griffis paints with masterful strokes and an expressive palette. In “look away” (2010, oil on canvas, 32.5 x 21.5 inches) she explores the representational qualities of abstraction and the non-objective qualities of figuration. On an emerald green background the portrait of a woman emerges from strong painterly strokes in white, mauve, mustard, and gray blue. Red lips and an arched eyebrow define feminine beauty whitely remainder of the portrait disappears into abstraction. On Griffis’ work, art critic Doug McClemont writes, “the artist’s emotional portraits could well be compared with those of contemporaries Chantal Joffe and Tabboo! With their blurred edges and dramatic use of color, Griffis’ work convey[s] the impression that memories and retellings can be strangely cloaked and yet, nevertheless, poignant” (review of “wings and murmurs” at 571 Projects NYC, ARTnews February 2012). A native New Yorker, Griffis received her MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts (Montpelier, VT) and her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. She has had solo exhibitions at the Pamela Williams Gallery (Amagansett, NY), Lizan Tops Gallery and AE Gallery (both East Hampton, NY), Whitney Art Works (Greenport, NY), The Boylan Gallery (Rhinebeck, NY), Blue Heron Arts Center (New York, NY) and 571 Projects (New York, NY). Her work has been included in group shows at The Waterfront Museum (Brooklyn, NY), White Columns (New York, NY), Bowman/Bloom Gallery (New York, NY), and Boltax Gallery (Shelter Island, NY) among others. Griffis has received fellowships from the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, (Ithaca, NY), Schloss Pluschow (Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, Germany), The Edward F. Albee Foundation (Montauk, NY) and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (Amherst, VA).
