ULPIANO CHECA Spanish, 1860 - 1916 VENICE CANAL signed & located "U. Checa" Venezia (lower left) Also dedicated: "A Marguerite Pinédo affectueusement" oil on canvas 18-3/8 X 21-3/4 inches (46.5 X 55 cm.) framed: 29-5/8 X 33 inches (75 X 83.6 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, France ULPIANO FERNANDEZ CHECA SANZ Known in the art world as Ulpiano Checa , was born in Colmenar de Oreja (Madrid) in 1860 and died in Dax (France) in 1916. He studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid as a student of Federico de Madrazo. In 1884 he obtained a scholarship to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and expand his studies. His first job as a pensioner causes expectation "The Invasion of the Barbarians" and is awarded at the National Exhibition of 1887 with first medal. In 1888 he moved to Paris as a graphic corpsponsal of the "Spanish and American Illusion", he quickly integrated into the French capital, and participated in all kinds of official acts and competitions of the artistic world. His studio at Boulevard Saint Honoré is frequented by the artists of the city. He is a consecrated painter who sells without difficulties. In 1888 he received the 2nd medal at the Vienna International Exhibition and a 3rd medal at the Universal Parisina in 1889. Its thematic is varied from the themes of Ancient History to the Orientalists, Parisian views and genre painting, with a thorough and precious brushstroke, which captures the effects of movement and speed (whether in its recreations of the careers of cavallos in the old Rome, or they get their scenes from the contemporary era). In the "90s" he travels across the Americas and also frequently travels to Venice where he lives long periods. This work of "Canal Veneciano" is inspired by these long stays in Venice. His brushstroke is much looser with an intense color palette. Life is serene in this painting, it no longer pursues movement as in its many previous works. The calm and calm waters led channel reflect all the intensity of the sun, creating iridescence of mauve, blue and cream colors. There is a light contrast between the two faces of facing houses. But the soft contrast, not very intense. Giving a feeling of placidity and charm to the work. • Orientalist Beach Scene, Chenoua Plage, Algerie, Oil On Canvas.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An Orientalist beach scene of the coast of Algeria at Chenoua by French painter Gustave Lino. The painting is signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a plain gilt frame. A charming and atmospheric view of a day at the beach. The revellers are enjoying bathing in the Mediterranean, resting under their colourful parasols against the sun and exploring the far off rocks of the cove. The sea gently lapping against the rocks at the shore. A small row boat ready for an excursion. Lino has beautifully captured the feeling of joy and fun that a day at the beach brings. Gustave Lino was born in 1893 in Mulhouse, France. At the age of twenty, he went to Marseille, discovered Provence and the Mediterranean. He was already interested in painting and art from numerous visits to the museum of his hometown, but he had not yet followed any training in this field. In Marseille, far from home and idle, he decides, almost on a whim, to travel to Algiers, without really knowing what he will discover there. He embarked for Algiers at the age of 19 in 1912. He exhibited with his friends Romeo Charles Aglietti in 1914 at 'Herero' in Algiers. Unfortunately in 1914 in Corsica in Ajaccio, being of German nationality and Mulhouse being part of the German Empire since 1871, he was interned as a 'civilian'. He spent the First World War in the Isle of Beauty but spent his time wisely developing his artistic skills. He realised many paintings as well as the historical decorations of the Solferino Hotel in Ajaccio and the religious decorations of the castle of Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère. In December 1918, he returned to Algiers where he was a pupil of Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1926 and at the Danton gallery, rue La Boétie in 1927. He settled permanently in Algiers and then in Bou-Saada. Back in Algeria, he took a close interest in the painting of Albert Marquet, which particularly seduced him and with whom he became a close friend. The transparent sharpness, this harmony of lines and tones becomes his ideal of perfection. He specialised in Algerian seascapes and landscapes, a colourist above all. Becoming an adopted member of the group called "Painters of Poetic Reality" (with Jean...
