About the Item

Paolo Paoletti (Padua, 1671 - Udine, 1735) Still life with fruits on a shelf Oil on canvas, 53.5 x 81 cm Expert opinion Dr. Gianluca Bocchi The still life under consideration can be attributed to the hand of Paolo Paoletti (1671 -1735). Born in Padua but settled in Udine when he was not yet 20 years old, the artist was hosted here for many years by the Caiselli counts, in whose palace an entire room was decorated with his works. Between 1708 and 1715 he appeared in the Fraglia of painters in Venice, for which he paid membership in 1712. The Venetian sojourn was of some significance for his artistic maturation, as he was able to frequent the stimulating international circles of the Lagoon. His allegories of the seasons and still lifes were mostly intended for wall decorations of stately residences in Friuli, among them the Attimis, Concinas, Giacomellis, Morelli de Rossi, del Torso, and Valentinis. These compositions depicting mainly edible kinds such as vegetables, fruits, meats, and cheeses were often embellished with flowers and sometimes framed by architectural backdrops or landscape backgrounds. The pronounced descriptive taste that characterizes them is akin to that of Bartolomeo Bimbi's (Settignano, 1648 - Florence, 1729) samplers, while knowledge of the works of Marchioni (Rovigo, 17th century - 18th century), Biggi (Parma, 1650 - Verona, c. 1700) and the Flemish must be attributed to the inserts with vases of flowers and game, represented by the painter with the precision of a keen and diligent chronicler. Flattering is Luigi Lanzi's quotation about his painting: "distinguished especially in flowers: and with much truth he portrayed eziando fruits, herbage, fish, caciaggioni." The refined compositional scheme with which the fruits of the still life examined here are described and ordered is marked by a diffuse and gradual brightness in the transitions to areas of shadow. From a dark, uniform background emerge clusters of grapes meticulously described in individual berries, a watermelon cut in half flanked by oranges and plums, and a plate of apples. Shining highlights are reflected on the fruit peels and on the plate resting on the elegant balustrade that forms the countertop of the refined composition. For comparison, see some of the author's works presented in the market, where among the jubilations of fruit and flowers the watermelon still stands out, depicted foreshortened and characterized by its juicy red flesh scattered with the small dark seeds.
