Peter Rodulfo
Surrealist Birthday Party Canvas Painting Schenzen China Green Yellow Red

2021

About the Item

The Birthday, acrylic on canvas, 77cm x 77cm, 2021 Even in his most realistic images, there is a beautiful exaggeration in the paintings of Peter Rodulfo. It may be an overly flamboyant palette or a carefully chosen viewpoint but nothing is everyday run-of-the-mill yet at the same time it may depict exactly that. Ranging from this carefully chosen reality to an overtly magical realism style, Rodulfo’s daily practice of painting oil or acrylic on canvas celebrates place and his place in it. Currently living and working in the seaside town of Great Yarmouth in the UK, Rodulfo studied at the Norwich School of Art & Design in the late 1970’s. A child of parents in the Secret Service, his has been a life well-travelled, across India, Australia and a recent discovery of his Caribbean roots and family in Trinidad. Culture, heritage, colour, life, imagination and the everyday inhabit the artist's paintings. The Birthday, In the artist's words, 'I spent a few months in a Chinese art centre doing an artist's residency. I got on very well with the staff, despite having no shared language. This painting is of a very convivial day and night celebrating the cook's birthday'. Artist bio: Peter Rodulfo (b.1958 Washington D. C.) a British Artist and sculptor spent much of his youth travelling across India and Australia before settling in Norfolk where he studied at the Norwich School of Art and Design between 1975 - 1979. His first solo exhibition was held in 1980 at the Margaret Fisher Gallery in London, where he showed regularly for several years, and it was here that he found his first patron Gustav Delbanco. From that time he has continued to show both at home in the UK, and internationally in Europe, Asia, USA and South America. In 2012 Rodulfo relocated to the Norfolk coastal town of Great Yarmouth where he is a member of the ‘Yarmouth Six’ Group. He is also a leading member of the art movement known as the North Sea Magical Realists. A flamboyant family history provided early inspiration. His Father Monty, denied an art education in Paris, was enlisted by the Intelligence services in South Asia, whilst his Danish Grandfather, Martinus Poulsen was the owner of the famous Cafe de Paris est in 1924 in London. Rodulfo was artist in residence at The Barony of Fulwood Trust Foundation Goiana Brazil in 2004, and artist in residence at Shenzhen, China during 2012-2013 and in 2016. He was Artist in Residence at The Barony of Fulwood Trust, Open for Art Project at Fund, Portugal. Throughout his career the artist has enjoyed solo shows across a wide geographical reach including London, Miami, Zurich, Brazilia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Hong Kong as well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy Summer Show in London and at The Barbican in London.

Just one of those days when everything goes right and the world is an exciting place. The very pavements seemed to be alive with magical stories to tell of the many feet that had trampled upon them. Everything seemed right with the world because I was going to meet my friend for a glass of wine. You know that friend who just gets you? Who you don't have to explain everything too, and they laugh in all the right places. I was going to meet that friend and have a glass of wine and everything else could wait. It really was the best day ever. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Artwork Details: Call of the Sea, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Call of the Sea: The sea was calling, calling its sirens song. It threw tempting little waves flirtatiously on the shore. 'Come,' it said, 'come.' The sea glittered with promise, it whispered sweet nothings as it rolled the tiny gem pebbles on the beach. 'Come to me,' it said, 'I will show you the world, the true meaning of life.' The people felt the pull, the blood pumping in their veins, like a magnet they were drawn towards the sea. Mesmerised, bewitched, they stripped of their clothes, leaving them in molehills on the beach. The breeze caressed bare bottoms, free from the constraints of life. They stepped cautiously at first but as excitement overwhelmed them they broke into a run as they neared the water. The sea tickled their toes and beckoned them in, making sweet promises of delightful pleasures. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Artwork Details: Water, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Water; Once upon a time there was water. It fell from the sky in clear blue droplets. It made pools and puddles on the ground. The water tasted sweet and pure, it was good to drink, to make soup, to swim in or to wash in. It made the plants and trees grow big and luscious, it was the lifeblood of everything.. Everybody loved water and no one ever questioned where it came from or that one day the rain might stop and there would be no water.  The water women went about their usual business, they made soup, they grew cabbages, they argued and laughed together. The well was always full, there was food aplenty, life thrived. It is sometimes said that ignorance is bliss, and the women did live in bliss although they did not know it. They did not know that one day the rain would stop. It was only when the rain stopped that they knew they had lived in bliss. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Barro America
By Starsky Brines
Located in New Orleans, LA
STARSKY BRINE’s paintings and drawings captivate audiences with their distinctive style and a recurring theme, the search for the nature of humanity. In his bold works, the artist focuses on characters that are built from a combination of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features, as well as the appropriation of elements from comics and toys from his childhood. On the one hand, these characters distort reality to venture into an environment of subcultures and urbanism created by the spontaneous intuition of his strokes and the appropriation of the contemporary iconography. On the other hand, they move within the realm of fantasy. In particular, the animals paired with their human characters evoke associations with fairy tales or comics. They are reminiscent of the world of theatre, in which fantasy and poetry but also comedy often serve as catalysts for the creation of critical meaning. With his works, Brines often questions the interplay of good and evil against the background of the worldwide socio-political climate. Yet Brines does not interpret his themes as ‘black and white.’ They are complex and nonlinear, with charming disruptions, quite serious and yet full of humor. Brines is personally influenced by his mother and art historically influenced by Latin American figurative art, the German Neoexpressionism, the Italian Transavantgarde, and the COBRA group. His works oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Brines holds a degree in Fine Art from the Instituto Universitario de Estudios Superiores de Artes Plásticas Armando Reverón...
