About the Item
"A contemplative homage to Morandi, where form, silence, and substance merge in quiet harmony."
Pierre Coquet (1926–2021)
Nature morte aux livres ouverts
Oil on canvas, 66 x 55 x 2 cm (26 x 21.7 x 0.8 in)
Framed in an antique wooden frame: 92 x 81 x 6 cm (36.2 x 31.9 x 2.4 in)
This oil painting by French artist Pierre Coquet is a refined still life that pays clear tribute to Giorgio Morandi. Framed in an elegant antique frame, the work features a restrained palette of earthy neutrals—beige, grey, and brown—applied with thick, textured brushstrokes. The minimalist composition centers around a few simple objects, likely bottles or vases, arranged behind a vertical structure that evokes a screen or partition.
Coquet’s treatment of light and form eschews realism in favor of subtle suggestion. Shapes emerge from layers of paint rather than precise outlines, and volume is expressed through the play of shadow and muted highlights. The result is a deeply atmospheric and meditative scene, where the beauty lies not in narrative detail, but in the quiet resonance of space, color, and material.
This work invites close, contemplative looking—a visual meditation on stillness, texture, and the expressive power of simplicity. The antique frame enhances the timeless quality of the composition, reinforcing its classical calm and understated elegance.

Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Abstract paintings by Pierre Coquet represent a large part of his production.
The constant search for balance between shapes and colors as well as his passion for Nicolas de Staël, André Lanskoy, Alfred Mannessier… takes him on different paths from what we know of him.
His way of painting is strong and thoughtful, the lines stretch out and the harmonious touches, applied with sobriety, reveal a great sense of color.
Provenance : Workshop of the artist (stamped and numbered on the back)
Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France.
He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran, Edouard Mouriquand, Pierre Palué, Paul Philibert-Charrin, Antoine Sanner and Françoise Juvin. The latter will become his wife in 1948.
In 1949, he participated in an exhibition in Geneva, at the Musée de l'Athénée, entitled "Eleven French painters" with Jacques Truphémus and Jean Fusaro. Françoise and Pierre moved to Paris in 1950. There he met Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him and whom he attended classes in his academy on Boulevard de Clichy. Working as an art teacher at the Corvisart school in Paris he painted a lot beside this activity. His main subjects are “assemblages of objects” which evoke the memory of Giorgio Morandi, the roofs of Paris, still lifes, characters in situation, and abstraction. This sincere and modest man, turned inward in a climate of deep meditation, likes to express his feeling that “all painters encounter the same difficulties in wanting to express unspeakable emotions with painting. Everything is possible, at the condition it is true ” use to say Pierre.
I have known Pierre for a long time and organized several exhibition with their paintings. I am now taking care of the whole workshop providing beautifiul figurative and abstract works, paintings and many drawings with various sizes. Pierre was always working in his workshop, everyday, he needed it, painting was something vital to him.
Paintings by Pierre Coquet are kept in the Museum Paul Dini in Villefranche. This well know museum has often exhibited works by the group « Sanzistes ».

Composition with jugs, oil painting by Pierre Coquet
Reference number F486
Framed with a natural oak floated frame
43 x 72 x 2 cm (48 x 77 x 3,5 cm frame included)
This work is painted with oil on a paper that is laid on a canvas and placed in a made to measure wood strectcher. Stamp of the signature in the bottom right and stamp of workshop on the back.
With simple, soft colors, Pierre brings these objects together in a neutral atmosphere, enhanced by this orange, which adds a luminous touch to the composition. Mostly broad brushstrokes, sometimes barely a sketch in the background. The material effects stand out well, the light coming from the right reinforces the contours of each of the objects presented.
Still lives are one of Pierre favourite subjects. Always in a very quiet atmosphere, with simple objects or alive nature.
