About the Item

"Les barques devant la fenêtre"/"Boats in font of the window" This oil on canvas was painted in the 1940s. A period during which René Levrel was staying in Vendée on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It measures 55 x 46 cm and 60 x 51 cm frame included. The artist's signature is located at the bottom right of the painting. René Levrel (1900-1981) is a French artist who was enrolled at the Nantes School of Fine Arts in 1916. He discovered the works of Gustave Courbet, Pierre Bonnard, Pierre Laprade and Félix Valloton. In Paris, he took courses at the National School of Fine Arts in 1920 and made many copies at the Louvre Museum (Chardin and Rembrandt). He participated in the Salon des Indépendants in 1925 and had his first exhibition at the gallery of the poet and playwright Charles Vildrac in 1927. René Levrel won the Abd-el-Tif prize in 1928. He stayed in Algiers at the Abd-el-Tif villa and became friends with Étienne Bouchaud, Pierre-Eugène Clairin, Jean Launois and Lucien Mainssieux. He became a member of the committee of the Society of Orientalist Artists and also a member of the Abd-El-Tif jury. Very attracted by southern Algeria, he went to Touggourt and traveled around Algeria. He returned to France in 1930. He discovered the Vendée and Saint-Jean-de-Monts, where he would return many times. He produced a monumental fresco for the Universal Exhibition of 1937 for the pavilion of the Papal States. A painter from Paris, member of the School of Paris: For professional reasons, he follows his wife, sister of the politician Pierre Abelin – minister under the Fourth and Fifth Republics – to Douai then to Aix-en-Provence. This last stay in the South inspired several of his oils and watercolors (Corsica, Marseille, Provence, La Sainte Victoire). In 1942, he settled permanently in Paris and lived at 27, quai de la Tournelle behind the apse of Notre-Dame and facing Île Saint-Louis. From his studio, like Albert Marquet, he painted numerous paintings having as their subject the Seine and the Parisian bridges (Pont Neuf, Pont Marie, Pont de la Tournelle, Pont de l'Île Saint-Louis). He also devotes many of his paintings to the Louvre Palace, the Hotel de la Monnaie, the Île Saint-Louis, the Institute, Notre Dame, the Jardin des Plantes. René Levrel is attached to the current of the School of Paris. Gérald Schurr situating René Levrei "in the course of the inter-war period, whose wealth had long been overshadowed by a noisy avant-garde", presented him thus in 1983: "René Levrel figures among these fundamentally independent artists, these painters unclassifiable whose natural expressionism seems strongly marked by the virulence of the Fauves. But his attachment to traditional values channels his passion, mastery in a composition that is always well paced. » The second Algerian period: He returned to Algeria in 1953 as a scholarship holder from the General Government for the southern territories and joined Étienne Bouchaud in Laghouat there. He finds his inspiration in Algerian landscapes, in scenes of Algiers and villages, in the Roman ruins of Tipaza. In 1957, he produced two decorative panels with Étienne Bouchaud for the reception room of the commander of Penthièvre II, a pinardier linking Oran to Nantes. A painter of the sea and the countryside: Although having stayed in Algeria and having traveled around the Mediterranean, his palette is clear dark. But he is also a great watercolourist. In France, his footsteps led him to Anjou (Champtoceaux), to Brittany at the end of the 1940s and in 1954 (Bénodet, Douarnenez, Telgruc) as well as to the Île d'Yeu, in Charentes, in Dauphiné (La In 1934, the City of Paris bought his canvas Printemps dans le Dauphiné), in the Alpes de Haute-Provence, in Poitou, in Seine-et-Marne and in Vendée. In 1962 he acquired a priory in a small town in Sarthe, Pruillé-l'Éguillé, which he made his second home until his death in 1981. through the description of the campaign, over the seasons. He retraces the rural life of that time in strong and colorful canvases representing orchards, harvests, the forest, work in the fields, animals and scenes of village festivals.
