About the Item

Signed figures in landscape oil on board circa 1905 by Australian-American impressionist painter Richard Hayley Lever. The work depicts fishing vessels docked in the harbour in Douarnenez in Brittany, France with the fishermen unloading their catch. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 23.5"x27.5" Unframed: 15.5"x19.5" Provenance: Clayton-Liberatore Gallery - New York Richard Hayley Lever settled in the USA in 1911. He trained in Paris and England, where he frequented the St Ives Group and began painting seascapes, a genre with which he later achieved widespread renown. His reputation was quickly established after his arrival in America, and his work featured in numerous exhibitions prior to the Wall Street Crash of 1929. He obtained American citizenship and taught at the Art Students' League from 1919 to 1931. He was the winner of the Carnegie Foundation prize in 1914. His early work was profoundly influenced by that of Vincent van Gogh.
