Richard Judson Zolan (1931-2001) "Be Calm" A sailor girl (or sailor boy) with a toy boat in a pond. Oil painting on canvas, hand signed upper left, Dimensions 40 x 30”, framed to 49 ½ x 39 ½ x 2 ½”. Artist’s copyright with signature and gallery label on back of frame. Chicago born Zolan graduated from the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago and later studied at the famed Art Students League in New York City. He quickly became the prized pupil of Louis Ritman, an instructor at the academy. Ritman, a personal friend and student of Claude Monet for over 20 years and was often invited to paint with the famous Impressionist artist at his private garden studio at Giverny. Ritman taught Zolan the fundamental techniques and style of Impressionism. He was the brother of Donald James Zolan. Born into a family legacy of five generations of artists and sculptors, Zolan can be seen as carrying John Singer Sargent’s legacy of American Impressionism into the late 20th century. He followed in the tradition of Reynolds Beal, Marilyn Bendell, Frank Weston Benson, Johann Berthelsen, Colin Campbell Cooper, Daniel Garber, Hayley Lever, Sueo Serisawa, Martha Walter and more. Significant exhibitions include the Metropolitan Galleries in Osaka, Japan, the World Trade Center, Cape Cod Art Association, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Richard spends his summers in Massachusetts with his family and winters in Palm Desert, California. Richard Zolan, who has long been adherent to the principles of European and American impressionism, has established himself as one of America's most exceptional painters of art, prints and posters. Richard Judson Zolan became an artist for the love of creating and the recognition his art has developed stems purely from talent. The most pervasive quality of his art, prints and posters is the extraordinary synergy he achieves in bringing to his canvas a triumphant marriage of modern art with its Renaissance ancestry. He is energetic, prolific and enthusiastic about his creativity. He pursues his art with precision, efficiency, love and optimism. His subjects included ballet dancers, florals, judaica, rabbi paintings, children at play and beautiful women. His romantic art, prints and posters have become a standard for an authentically distinct genre, Romantic American Impressionism. He is of the generation of artists that included Douglas Arthur Teed, Tucker Bobst, Alexander Dzigurski, Ernest T Fredericks, Andre Gisson, Donald Purdy, Willem Van Den Berg, Hudson Mindell Kitchell, Svend Svendsen, Antoine Blanchard, Jules Rene Herve, Yolande Ardissone and others. Exhibiting internationally, Richard Judson Zolan lives as he paints, with verve, vigor and creativity.

1972 Gestural Oil Painting Boat in Harbor Figural Abstraction Raoul Middleman
By Raoul Middleman
Located in Surfside, FL
Raoul Middleman (born 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American painter. Middleman has been a member of the Maryland Institute College of Art faculty since 1961. American University Museum at the Katzen Center has described Middleman as a "Baltimore maestro [whose] nudes are not pretty—they are sagging, dimpled, and real. His cityscapes reveal the underbelly of post-industrial rot, his narrative paintings give contemporary life to his personal obsessions. They are intelligent, messy, and utterly masterful." From an interview with RM "I was doing abstract art. Then Roy Lichtenstein came around, and I wanted to be current. I remember Grace Hartigan said, “You’ve gotta go to New York, seize destiny by the hand.” My friend Jon Schueler took my slides up to Eleanor Ward, who had the Stable Gallery. My Pop art paintings were discovered. I moved to New York into Malcolm Morley’s old loft down on South Street. Agnes Martin was upstairs... People who interest me come from different quarters. I knew guys around Schueler, like B.H. Friedman. But I also knew the Pop world pretty well – Al Hansen, Richard Artschwager, Lichtenstein. I became friends with Raoul Hague...

Oil Painting Harbor Scene with Naval Ships Sailors & Boats Hildegarde Hamilton
By Hildegarde Hamilton
Located in Surfside, FL
Hildegarde Hamilton (Florida, Virginia 1898-1970) Oil on canvas painting of a docked navy ship with sailors on shore. Hand signed lower left Measures: Canvas 19"H x 23"W; Framed 23.5"H x 28"W. Hildegarde Hume Hamilton (1898 - 1970) was active/lived in Florida, Virginia. He is known for Impressionist buildings in landscape and coastal view painting, illustration. Hildegard Hume Hamilton was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1898. After her education there, and brief training at the age of six in art schools in Venice, Italy, while on a European sojourn with her father, she studied fine art at the Académie Julian, the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Grande Chaumière in Paris, France, during the 1920s and 1930s. Back in the United States, Hamilton studied for a short time at the Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, the Cincinnati Art Academy and under the tutelage of the landscape and maritime painter Anthony Thieme (1888-1954) in Rockport, Massachusetts. The Ainslie Galleries on Fifth Avenue held an exhibit of Hamilton’s French Alpine Scenes to much acclaim. Hamilton exhibited in venues throughout the city and sold as many as 300 landscapes. In 1927, Vice President Charles Gates Dawes acquired one of Hamilton’s paintings following her one person exhibit at the Women’s National Party Headquarters in Washington D.C. In the autumn of 1928, an exhibition of her landscapes and cityscapes at the Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris was widely and positively reviewed. In 1929, she became the first American woman to exhibit at Philip Dillon’s club – L’Artistique, in Provence. She also contributed to the Salon des Artistes Independants in Paris. In 1930, Hamilton exhibited at the Carlton Hotel in Washington D.C. and in New York at the Grand Central Palace, American Art Association-Anderson Galleries on 57th Street, and the Huntington Bay and Yacht Clubs. During this period, the artist resided at 9 Gramercy Park in New York City. The picturesque neighborhood inspired Hamilton’s painting entitled 4 Gramercy Park, Mayor Harper’s House, Manhattan. C. 1930. The oil painting captures the red brick façade and intricate cast iron embellishments of 4 Gramercy Park, the former home of publisher and New York City Mayor James Harper (1795- 1869). The two lamps at the foot of the steps signify the home was a mayoral residence and remain at the site to this day. Mrs. Hamilton studied at the Art Students League, New York, New York, and the Cincinnati Art Academy, Cincinnati, Ohio. Hamilton exhibited her topographical street-scenes and landscapes widely throughout the United States with shows at the Syracuse, New York, Museum of Fine Art; the University of Kentucky; the University of Georgia, and most importantly, New York City’s Society of Independent Artists from 1929 to 1933, 1938, 1939, 1943 and 1944. She also illustrated books. Hamilton’s paintings are included in the collections of Wesleyan College, She was aof a generation of American artists that included Alfred Hutty, Wayne Beam Morrell, Frank Henry Shapleigh, Jane Peterson, Henry Martin Gasser, Emil Holzhauer...

Modernist Abstract Oil Painting Marine Seascape Sunset w Boat Ralph Della Volpe
Located in Surfside, FL
RALPH DELLA-VOLPE (1923-2017) Fine Art Painter, American Contemporary Sunset Sail Oil on canvas Hand signed lower right and verso 22 x 20 inches Provenance: The Estate of the artist Ralph Della Volpe TRAINING: National Academy of Design The Art Students League, NYC Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe's semi-abstract paintings of often simplified, minimalist, beach scenes and anonymous portraits "convey profound awareness of mood and character", and his paintings are hardly as literal as they may first appear (Arts Magazine. "New York Exhibitions". 1965). His brightly-colored, light-infused, ornamental compositions bring together aspects of many modernist art movements including Fauvism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and abstraction. Della-Volpe first studied painting at the prestigious National Academy of Design before joining the Army during World War II. As a soldier, the artist saw action on Utah Beach, winning a Purple Heart, and his experiences undoubtedly affected his later artistic style. The Fauvist "coloristic exuberance" found in the works beginning in the mid 1960's, with their vibrant fuschias and yellows, seem to offset what could be an otherwise solemn tone to many of his works at the time. Upon his return from military service, Della-Volpe’s style evolved significantly. In the years following the second world war, his work was solemn, imbued with a quiet darkness. Over time, this darkness faded: by the 1950s, influenced by his time at the Art Students League, his oeuvre was overtaken by the tenants of Abstract Expressionism. Paintings from this period boast bold brushwork, energetic compositions, and strong color. Although the next decade saw Della-Volpe trade expressionist abstraction for figuration, his love of color continued to shine through his work.Della-Volpe took a teaching position as the first artist-in-residence at Bennett College in Millbrook, New York where he remained for 28 years, serving as chairman of the Art Department for most of that time. Obviously influenced by impressionism 's preoccupation with the treatment of light, Della-Volpe's own works have a "faultless tonal quality, with its sense of failing light—the areas of silvery gray deepening into rosy tans" (Arts Magazine. "In the Galleries". 1960). Della-Volpe has exhibited widely throughout his career and has lectured on art at colleges, universities, and galleries across the country.
