About the Item

Spirituality and Christianity played an important role for Hamstra in, as he put it himself, 'the making' of his artworks. combined, he wanted to create a powerful, almost ghostly sacred image for his audience. There are drawings where he played with the emotion and devotion. An example of this can be seen in his work Pieta (1958). Pieta means compassion, and Hamstra draws the viewer to the feeling of mercy. Hamstra has captured the moment when the dead Jesus becomes Mary through his mother after the crucifixion. He depicts the difference between Mary's various exercises on the death of her son and the torturous suffering that gripped Mary Magdalene (in the background). The mother, knowing that a sword would pierce her soul as Simon had told her shortly after Jesus was born, endures the pain in a painful situation. Mary Magdalene did not come into existence. In the background we see Joseph sunk in deep meditation.
