Ross Dickinson "Crash," 23 x 38 inches, oil on canvas, circa 1930, signed lower right. Framed by Heydenryk.
Ross Dickinson began his career as an artist in California. In 1926 Dickinson spent nine months in New York City studying with John Costigan at the Grand Central School of Art and Charles Hawthorne at the National Academy of Design. He also received a scholarship from the Tiffany Foundation. Dickinson then returned to California and studied at the Santa Barbara School of Fine Arts, where he received his first mural commission. By 1934 he was involved in the Public Works of Art Project, which led to numerous mural commissions in the mid-1930s. As part of the Smithsonian’s great “1934” exhibition, his work was selected for the cover of the book. This modern American oil painting was likely created in Los Angeles after the artist left New York City.
The painting measures 23 x 38 inches and the framed work is 31 x 46 inches.
