Austrian, late 19th Century
Frame: Height 94cm, width 126cm, depth 8cm

This charming oil painting depicts a classroom filled with young schoolgirls during a moment when their teacher is away. Most of the girls take advantage of the situation: some dance, some pretend to play instruments, others play with cards, another draws on a blackboard. The sense of animation is palpable, as is the boisterous noise. The painterly manner of the work is fine and precise, with the features of the figures, as well as the classroom setting itself, rendered with great delicacy and naturalism. The painting, signed lower left ‘R. Geyling’, is contained within a giltwood frame.
