About the Item

Ruter Hiemstra Infinity Part I Oil on wood panel 80 x 122 cm In this painting the artist shows all his still-life subjects he likes to paint 'after life' . Now in an other way as he 'normally' uses to do. Dutch artist Rutger Hiemstra (1975) understands the art of painting from observation. Still lifes, landscapes, portraits and combinations of objects, all painted and/or drawn 'from life'. Realism Although Hiemstra makes his work while looking at his subject, the paintings are 'loose, open & everywhere picturesque'. The brushstrokes, colors and also the panel remain part of the whole. Nowhere in his work does it become 'clean' or 'a fight', everywhere the work is transparent and loose in character. Hiemstra also likes to play with the 'flat surface' and makes his still lifes in such a way that they appear 3-dimensional from a distance. Another work becomes a trompe-l'oeil in which the viewer has to resist the urge to feel 'if it is real'. Antidepressants in paint Following the participation in a group exhibition at Bonnard in 2018, a nice review appeared in the NRC, which also meant that Hiemstra's work became nationally known. The writer of the piece, art critic Gijsbert van der Wal, ended the piece with: “A crankier critic might find it all too appetizing, too marketable, not too abrasive. You wish such a person a little of Hiemstra's unspoilt enthusiasm for the things around us. Their still lifes are antidepressants in paint: if you look closely, they say, life is worth living.” In 2021, the artist was seen at work in his studio on Dutch TV. For the 'Klokhuis' program he painted a small still life of a 'banana in a lunchbox'. Relaxed, cheerful and colorful Rutger Hiemstra tells the interviewer, while he builds the composition and finally paints the still life on a panel, about what he is doing. He is exceptionally skilled and virtuoso at work here. The result is just as cheerful, colorful and relaxing to look at. It is special how this character of the artist is, also his working method and the character of the final painting. Feel free to ask us for more information if you would like. Mental Structures- 21st Century Contemporary Still-life Painting
By Daniela Astone

Italian artist Daniela Astone lives and works in Florence. She enjoys working with live models and paints her works from observation, the classical approach she learned at the Academy in Florence and which she now teaches to her students. Daniela Astone graduated in 2004. She had her first solo exhibition shortly afterwards in the United States. Since then, the international attention of the Italian artist has only grown. The classical structure and narrative paintings show a technique that is special. Her style is virtuoso and her subjects are narrative. The keys are loose and subtle. Standing in front of a painting means watching...

"The Resort" Sietse W. Jonker 21st Century Contemporary Oil Painting
Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
Since August 2018 Sietse W. Jonker belongs to the group of artists that we permanently represent in our stock-exposition. In mid-2019, this still-life artist will take part in a group exhibition devoted to still life in painting. His work can be seen all year round and for sale through our gallery. To get to know us, we visited the artist in his studio in Leeuwarden. a centrally located donkey and a window on the Noorderlicht dominate the space together with the still life that he is currently working on. According to the artist, a still life should not be 'made to look', in the final painting it should ultimately be an ordered harmony. The artist himself: That is not always easy and sometimes I am busy with all kinds of objects here in the house. Every now and then something comes up or something is taken away again until I am satisfied. Usually I have a vague idea of what I want, but to give that 'vague idea' a concrete form is quite difficult. The idea then to create a three-dimensional world on a two dimensional level intrigues Sietse Jonker...
