About the Item

"The Model #5" is a pastel on paper showing a nude female figure emerging from what appears to be an evening darkening mist where a distant landscape is suggested or perhaps she is emerging from the sea. The figure floats rather than walks into the picture space and movement forward is suggested by her highlighted body and dark ground and that her head has moved beyond the picture frame. This is an exceptional mystical pastel painting by Thom O'Connor who is most readily known for his Lithographs and therefore, "The Model #5" is an especially important piece. The image framed measures 26 x 32 inches. Thom O’Connor is an American artist born in Detroit and known throughout the country for his masterful lithograph prints. He was a Professor, at the University of Albany, in Albany, NY. from 1962 – 2000. He is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. He studied at the University of Michigan and received is MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC) and Cory Puhlman (Pastry Chef extraordinaire winning numerous televised competitions.) He is a National Endowment in the Arts, grantee and received a Fullbright Award among others. Thom’s work can be seen in many collections including San Diego Art Museum; Pasadena Art Museum; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Phillips Collection; Smithsonian Institute; Baltimore Museum of Art; Rochester Memorial Art Gallery; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum and many more. He has retired from teaching and now lives in Voorheesville, NY. This piece has the provenance on verso: 267 Oxford Station, New York
