About the Item

A large classical painting by Thomas Ralph Spence (1845-1918), of a maenad dressed in red, holding a thyrsus or sceptre crowned with a pineapple. Next to her is a large blue ceramic vase with a grapevine growing on a large stick. Behind her, a large wall with painted acanthus leaves forming an ornamental background. Signed and dated T.R.S. 1895. Oil on canvas. Original frame. 152cmx66cm without frame. In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers of the Greek vine god Dionysus and the most significant members of the thiasus, the god's retinue. Their name, literally translates as 'raving ones'. Maenads were known as Bassarids, Bacchae, or Bacchantes in Roman mythology. The thyrsus is also typically associated with Dionysus, and represents a symbol of prosperity, fertility, and hedonism. In this painting, the thyrsus is crowned by a pineapple symbolizing wealth. Thomas Ralph Spence, (sometimes known as T.R. Spence) was born in Richmond, Yorkshire, England in 1845. Spence was a talented painter, architect and designer. Spence's friend and colleague Frederick Hamilton Jackson (1848-1923), writing in his 1903 retrospective on the artist, noted that Spence had made the acquaintance of the shipbuilder and art-collector Charles Mitchell (1820-95) for whom he was engaged to do major estate works at Mitchell's Newcastle mansion, Jesmond Towers. Spence was then encouraged by Mitchell's son, the artist Charles William Mitchell to move to London, and by 1885 he was established as an 'architectural decorator' in London. In 1886, Spence joined the Art Worker's Guild, and the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement was brought to bear on Spence's next major project, St George's Church in Jesmond. Commissioned by Mitchell Senior, the church is regarded as Spence's greatest architectural triumph; as Neil Moat notes, it was 'the commission of a lifetime, his "one supreme effort", a summation of his talents as architect, artist and craftsman.' In addition, Spence resumed his ambitions as an easel artist, he painted landscapes and classical scenes in the style of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and between 1882 and 1916 exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society, Baillie Gallery, the Grosvenor Gallery, the New Gallery, and the Royal Society of British Artists in London; the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham; the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool; the Manchester City Art Gallery; the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh; and the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He also participated in the exhibitions of the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society exhibitions in London between 1888 and 1910. As a somewhat of an artist with many talents he also was one of the founding members of the Society of Designers (established 1896), contributing stained glass, metalwork (he became something of a specialist designer of light fittings). Hamilton Jackson, who was noticeably more sympathetic towards Continental Art Nouveau than most English critics of the time, thought T.R. Spence to be a great innovator, and as having adopted "those qualities of line which formed the basis of the 'new art' ... long before they became fashionable". Although he trained as an architect, he only completed a few architectural commissions. These included the interior of All Saints Church in Ennismore Gardens, London and the previously mentioned Jesmond Church. Spence came to primarily work as a painter, metalworker and wallpaper designer. The background wall of painted acanthus leaves in this painting is reminiscent of some of the wallpaper designs that he made.
