French school 19th romantic Historical scene Duke GUISE DURANTI Oil Sketch

1820-1859

About the Item

19th century French school Oil on canvas 33 x 41 cm (53 x 45 cm with the frame) Original canvas with the stamp of the merchant "Vallé & Bourniche / Successeurs de Bellot" active in Paris between 1825 and 1841 This work was painted between 1825 and 1841 as the stamp of the canvas merchant indicates (he was active in Paris at this period of time). The subject is probably the death of President Duranti. After the assassination of the Duke of Guise, the leaguers attacked the king's supporters. In Toulouse at the beginning of 1589, they sought for President Jean-Etienne Duranti, first president of the parliament of Toulouse from 1581 to 1589. On February 10, 1589, he was dragged out of the Dominican convent where he had taken refuge. Duranti appeared in front of his opponents in his official clothes and gave a speech to explain his point of view. But he was assassinated by the armed mob.
