A large and very well executed mid century modernist composition, executed in oil onto board.
This expressive painting depicts a seated woman reading, dressed in traditional folk attire. The style is loose and painterly, using bold, gestural brushstrokes and a rich, saturated palette. Her clothing includes a bright headscarf with red and black patterns, a white blouse with red stripes, and a long dark skirt with accents of red and orange. The background is vibrant and dynamic, filled with blue, green, and white dabs that suggest a decorative wall or patterned wallpaper.
A mirror behind her reflects her image, adding depth and a secondary viewpoint. The use of reflection, along with the energetic brushwork, infuses the composition with movement and vibrancy.
This large oil on board is housed in a well made gilt frame with an inner linen lined border, The painting is in excellent vintage condition. There is some very minor scuffing to the frame, but it is in very good condition overall.

👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez
José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919. He studied at the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts and began exhibiting in the 1940s. By 1947, he had fully devoted his career to bullfighting scenes, developing a distinctive figurative expressionist style with impressionist influences.
He collaborated with the magazine El Ruedo, creating numerous illustrations and covers, and designed collectible postcards for Editorial Artigas. His work became well-known in Spanish artistic circles and is now part of both private and institutional collections, including the Club Taurino of London.
His paintings have been auctioned internationally, reaching up to $3,000 depending on size and subject. His legacy is that of a painter who masterfully captured the emotion, tradition, and drama of the Spanish corrida.
