Walter Baum was born December 14, 1884 in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. Though coming from a family of barbers, Walter began pursuing a career in art from a young age. He studied Pennsylvania-German folk art, known as fraktur, under the tutelage of Isaac Hilker. Baum got his start designing decorations for official documents of local families. In 1904 he apprenticed under the artist William Trego, then attended classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1905 to 1906. There he studied under prominent painters such as Thomas Anshutz, Daniel Garber, Hugh Breckenridge, William Chase, and Cecilia Beaux.
Walter Baum was a member of the New Hope Art Colony. A painter, critic, author, and educator, he was the only one of the Pennsylvania Impressionists to be born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. To many, he was considered the “father of art in the Lehigh Valley.” Early into his career, he gained national recognition in winning the prestigious Jennie Sesnan Gold Medal for his painting Sunlight and Shadows at an exhibition in 1925 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Displayed in over one hundred fifty museum exhibitions and receiving more than thirty awards. He later won the Zabriskie Prize in 1945 from the American Watercolor Society and the Medal of Honor in 1953 from the National Arts Club. Baum maintained a constant association with Philadelphia's prominent art organizations, including the Philadelphia Art Alliance, The Sketch Club, and The Art Club. Dedicated to the preservation of the arts, Baum helped to found the Lehigh Art Alliance and the Allentown Art Museum, where served as first director and taught for 40 years thereafter. He established his own school, the Baum School of Art, in 1929, but retired as director of the school shortly before his death in 1956.
Baum found inspiration in the realist art of Homer and Eakins, the Ashcan artists, plein air depictions of Edward Redfield, and the paintings of Walter Elmer Schofield. He worked across many mediums, including pastels, casein, lithography, ink and graphite, and watercolors, creating works as small as a photo to spanning several feet across. Preferring to paint outdoors even in the worst weather, living in Sellersville provided Baum with endless subject matter.

Born in Pittsburgh in 1879 to Nicholas and Katherine Sotter, George William Sotter painted the rivers and mills of that city in his early youth. He apprenticed with several stained-glass studios there prior to becoming a partner in the studio of Horace Rudy in Pittsburgh around 1901. He took leave from the studio and came to Bucks County in 1902, to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as with Edward W. Redfield, the premier painter of the New Hope School. In 1903, he participated in the annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the Academy from 1905 – 1907 under William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz.
George William Sotter lived in Holicong, Pennsylvania, near New Hope, in a converted 19th Century stone barn. There, in his studio, he painted landscape scenes of Bucks County, which link Sotter to the New Hope School of American Impressionism...

24 x 20 inches
A native of Windham, New Hampshire, upon graduation from high school, Titcomb studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, before accepting a position as a drawing teacher in the public schools of Brockton, Massachusetts, where she remained for fourteen years before resigning, in 1889, to study painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her instructors there included Edmund Charles Tarbell, Philip Leslie Hale, and Frank Weston Benson. In the 1890s she went to Paris to study with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and to travel. She then returned to Boston, taking studio space at the Harcourt Studios, where all three of her teachers kept space. In 1895 she became a member of the Copley Society and began exhibiting locally; from 1904 to 1927 she showed work in 29 exhibits at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She began signing her name as "M. Bradish Titcomb" in 1905 to avoid prejudice against her gender. The same year saw her making a sketching trip to the artists' colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut, a center for the American Impressionists; this trip seems to have cemented her interest in the style.
In 1915, Titcomb's Portrait of Geraldine J. – the mother of actress Jane Russell – was shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and purchased by President Woodrow Wilson; another portrait, of Frank P. Sibley, was reproduced in the Boston Globe. During this period her work was shown in a traveling exhibition with that of Cecilia Beaux, Lydia Field Emmet, Jean MacLane...

This notable American Impressionist was a long-time member of the Rochester Art Club and served as president of the Genesee Group of Painters. The Genesseeans sought to capture the Spirit of Place in their rendering of regional landscapes, and were dedicated to resisting the incursions of European modernism. Holm later became involved with the Rationalists, who he helped to organize in 1939, also in Rochester, and whose artistic goal was "orderly creation and craftsmanship plus individuality." He remained a central figure in the Rochester art colony and served as president of the Rochester Art Club between 1957 and 1959.
