William Baxter Palmer Closson
Oil Figurative Painting of People Walking

c. 1910

About the Item

William Baxter Closson was born in 1848 in Vermont. He went to Boston as an apprentice wood engraver with Samuel S. Kilburn and studied drawing at the Lowell Institute. Closson worked as a free-lance engraver for Century Co., Harper's, and for various Boston book publishers. He also shared a studio with George Fuller. He then went to Europe in 1881–1883, to engrave masterpieces for Harper's and is exhibited at the Paris Salon. He switched in the middle of his career from engraving to painting and has become internationally known for his whimsical figurative paintings. In America, he has been recognized by many prominent museums and galleries. This piece in particular has a very dramatic and bright color palette. In other paintings he frequently uses pastels and more muted colors to match the angelic abstraction he portrays. Therefore, having such a bright color scheme in this painting is unique and very sought after by this artist. This painting is in excellent condition and comes with frame!
