About the Item
Probable advertisement for a gun or ammunition company.
William Harnden Foster's vibrant painting, Missed Again, captures a moment of humorous frustration with characteristic energy. The scene depicts a farmer, shotgun in hand, reacting to a raptor's successful raid on his poultry. A spent shell clutched in his fist, the man's exaggerated pose emphasizes his comical rage, while another discarded shell underscores his repeated failure. A curious horse, peering from the stable, adds to the scene's charm.
This portrayal of an agitated farmer echoes another Foster work, "Tarnation," which graced the August 1922 cover of National Sportsman magazine and also served as a Parker Gun advertisement, showcasing their "Old Reliable" firearms. While Missed Again has yet to be located in print, the indications on the reverse suggest it was reproduced in black and white. The similarities of the two pictures in both style and subject suggest Missed Again was also intended as an advertisement for a gun or ammunition company.
Foster's artistic training at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and later under the renowned teacher Howard Pyle in Delaware informed his prolific illustration career. Beyond his commercial advertising work and illustrations produced for the covers and interiors of magazines, Foster authored and illustrated the highly regarded sporting book, New England Grouse Shooting. He also co-invented the game "Shooting around the clock," the precursor to the popular sport of Skeet. As assistant editor for Hunting and Fishing and National Sportsman magazines in the 1920s, Foster championed Skeet, later becoming the first president of the National Skeet Shooting Association and its inaugural Hall of Fame inductee.

Prospector firing Rifle ( Happiness is a Warm Gun ) Gay Art
By Robert Riggs
Located in Miami, FL
Tempera mixed with gum arabic and alcohol on Renaissance Panel
Robert Riggs was a gay man. Being gay in American during the 1940's time was something not to flaunt in public. Rigg's had to communicate his underlying feelings in more symbolic ways.
Throughout Riggs oeuvre, one sees continuous references to strong hunked out manly men and vulnerable boys. It is a core element of is iconography and is described in a powerful graphic style.
In “Prospector firing Rifle” is a Dick Pic. Riggs is clearly making a sexual statement about the moment of climax. The long, straight rifle explodes and is captured at the peak moment of climax. Meanwhile, the bag two bags of gold clearly resemble the other part of the male anatomy. Riggs was a thoughtful and meticulous visual thinker and nothing in any of Riggs’s compositions were haphazardly placed. In tribute to the artist’s suppressed feelings, I have given this work a second title “Happiness is a Warm Gun...

A hunting scene in a beautiful early autumnal wooded landscape, with two hounds and a pheasant in the foreground.
For an artist of such ability, popularity and wide output, information about Samuel Jones is comparatively scarce. Samual John Egbert Jones was born in 1797. Living in London, the first recorded mention of him was as an exhibitor at the Royal Academy in 1820 with a picture of an old mare, which he later exhibited at the British Institute in 1824. Jones is best known for the fine quality of his sporting pictures, mainly portraits of hunting and work horses. Additionally, he painted coaching...
