About

The artist Yaroslava Tichshenko described the experience of creating this artwork: “I painted this work in just a few hours, sneaking into my studio in March 2020, when the first quarantine restrictions were just being introduced. All establishments were closed, the city was very empty, there was not a single soul in the entire building in which my studio is situated. As I arrived at the studio I decided to express this emotion of bewilderment with what was happening since at the start of the quarantine everything was so new, so different, and it was not clear how long it might last. Wearing masks seemed strange and temporary but unfortunately, a return to normal has taken much longer. The emotion embedded in this self-portrait is very telling: it reveals surprise turning into fear and with a dash of madness in response to the impossibility of what is happening.” Lively, daring, and bold, Yaroslava is unable to paint in any other manner. The energetic decorativeness of her work, rooted in the impressionist and post-impressionist tradition, is intensified by the outstanding draughtsmanship and psychological honesty typical of her work. Yaroslava Tichshenko studied painting professionally for 11 years, including a rigorous 6-year program at the world-famous Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia, from which she graduated in 2016. Since then Yaroslava has held exhibitions in Japan, China, UK, Russia, and Kazakhstan, including exhibitions at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London. We as The Russian Ark Gallery are proud to represent her work.
