Yves Calméjane
"Lord de Borias Married His Daughter", Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting

2013

About the Item

This painting has an interesting backstory. Borias is a French locality of the Livradois-Forez, between Augerolles and the Brugeron. The artist was painting this artwork, when the owner of the farm on the left went to discuss with him, and told him he didn't operate the farm anymore : he "married his daughter". The artist didn't understand what he meant so the man explained that "marrying his daughter" was an expression meaning he was getting old. When the man went away on the path, the artist added his silhouette on his project. The artwork became an allegory of the rural world going away. This painting has another particularity : although a rural landscape, houses take most of the space, while Calméjane usually prefers natural landscapes. The style is also somehow different, with long touches and large zones of almost plain color. Yves Calméjane usually uses light impasto techniques, with the weft of the canvas often still visible, and this artwork is no exception. The reliefs are quite thin, the painting often spread out. The color palette is soft, with very elaborate tones, no rough paint from the tube. Yves Calméjane doesn't try to embellish the colors : although an impressionist he has a very realistic approach in terms of colors and ambiances, which can on some paintings give an impression of austerity. This is not the case on this one, though : although very sober, the lighting is very soft. Yves Calméjane always paints his landscapes in situ. The canvas has been prepared and stretched by the artist himself, with skin glue. The sides are covered with a grey custom adhesive for a better rendering in case the artwork is to be mounted on a floating frame. The artist always use renowned brands for his color tubes, with quality pigments. The canvas is not completely covered by paint, there are a few spots where the (brown) canvas is naked. This piece is not framed. Yves Calméjane is a French artist, mostly influenced by Auguste Chabaud and Jean Arène.
