About the Item

"Unexpected Visitors" is a classic and wonderful early example of Anne Coe's painting on canvas. Titled "Unexpected Visitors" and signed "Anne Coe" in pencil on the back of the painting, this is a gem of a wholly original work painted by Anne. Coe’s early paintings were humorous and comic-book styled. Over the years, her paintings evolved from lighthearted whimsy (such as radioactive, mutant Gila monsters destroying the world in retaliatory rage) to more mature works with a confidence of message and style. Throughout her artistic development, her commitment to change through art has remained constant. Painterly technique, strong narrative content, and the refreshing element of humor are all aspects of Coe's work that make it so compelling and accessible. "My paintings function to connect human culture to the natural world. My paintings allow me to imagine a connection between the body and nature, self and place. Often I deal with the conflicts between the wild and civilized worlds. My work is filled with irony, humor, pathos, and contradiction and as such represents the ambivalence humans have always felt for the natural world. We love it and yet want to possess it and define it and therefore, by extension, limit it. This, we all know in the end is folly." The painting itself measures 16.50 x 16.50 inches and is in excellent original condition.

Lindy's new series includes all variety of animals, including horses. Lindy Chambers says: "When I start to paint, the color is intuitive, and the process is spontaneous. I try to listen to the canvas and react to it. I follow the river of the subconscious - it is all about exploration and revelations along the way. My attention is drawn to the relationship of forms - and to unrecognizable shapes that are thought provoking and unworldly." Lindy Chambers has had solo exhibitions at the Lawrence Arts Center, Lawrence, Kansas; Women & Their Work, Austin, Texas; Fort Worth Community Arts Center, Fort Worth, Texas; and Pelham Art...
