Edward Sylvester Hynes
Barroom Calm and Barroom Brawl, a pair of paintings

c. 1935

About the Item

Measures Painting 13.75 x 18 inches Framed 19.5 x 23.25 inches Edward Sylvester Hynes (1897–1982) was an Irish artist renowned for his work as a joke and political cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator, and painter. Born in Burren, County Clare, Ireland, he was raised in Nottingham, UK. Hynes served in the Merchant Navy and pursued medical studies at Sheffield University. His artistic career began around 1923 with caricatures appearing in "Town Topics." Hynes gained prominence for his color caricature covers for "Men Only" magazine between 1937 and 1956. His contributions extended to publications such as the "Daily Sketch," "Evening News," "Sunday Express," and theatrical caricatures for the "Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News." In addition to magazine work, Hynes designed advertisements for brands like Guinness and Player’s Tobacco. Later in life, he returned to Burren, focusing on oil paintings and charcoal drawings. His legacy endures through his distinctive contributions to illustration and caricature, reflecting a unique blend of humor and artistic skill. In these two works, the narrative is very engaging, as we watch a normal night with friends turn into fisticuffs, a commentary on the sometimes rowdiness of pub life. The present pair of pendant works retain custom wood frames covered in genuine white gold gilding.
