It was late in the afternoon and the storm came up and dumped a ton of water on the El Ray Motel, then receded as fast as it came. I like how the afternoon light played on the windows. Made them look as if they were waiting for something. Night? Another cloud burst? The El Ray has been waiting for you right on the highway for decades, that is, if you're willing to give up the Interstate for a while.
About the Artist
Mitchell Freifeld cannot remember a time when he did not draw and paint. He won his first juried show at age 10 and decided that someday, he;d be a real painter. He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early ;70s and got involved in the burgeoning tech industry. From there, he moved to Portland upon accepting an information technology position. After being laid off the day of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he devoted himself full-time to painting and has been living his dream ever since. His work focuses on architecture and cityscapes, and portrays everyday places that become lost to our curiosity through sheer familiarity.

Hadley’s subject matter is inspired by her San Francisco surroundings, particularly the city at night. Her glowing depictions of light sources are reminiscent of a blurred photograph or a bleary-eyed nighttime stroll. Hadley developed her love for art from her mother, a watercolorist, and continued to pursue her artistic career at a collegiate level and beyond. She now works out of a small studio in San Francisco’s Mission District. Hadley goes into her studio seven days a week with her Boston terrier puppy.

Inspired by a photograph, artist Hadley Northrop beautifully captures the enduring charm of a little street that remains unchanged over the years. "There is something irresistible about lit-up windows at night," shares Hadley. Set against the cobalt blue sky, the lights ranging from cream to persimmon cast a warm and inviting glow to the scene. "I used to live in England and loved the ordinary old buildings."
