Pierre Bergian
Bibliothèque of Madeleine Castaing, Lèves, France

2020

About the Item

A five-bedroom, pale blue-and-turquoise country house located an hour and a half southwest of Paris, Maison de Lèves served as a lifelong laboratory for France’s maîtresse of interiors, Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992). In it, she developed the effortless theatricality of le style Castaing, with many of the hallmarks seen here: robin’s egg blue, neoclassical furniture, and wall-to-wall leopard-spot carpeting. Castaing, who spent decades nurturing artists like Soutine, famously drew upon the fevered descriptions of rooms in the works of Proust, Zola, and Balzac. Pierre Bergian (Bruges, Belgium, b. 1965) explores the essence of space, depicting architectural interiors with an expressive line that renders them out of time. Bergian lives and works in Bruges, where he continues to be fascinated by the many historic, abandoned buildings there. The artist studied art history and archaeology at the University of Ghent and has exhibited internationally, including at Purdy Hicks Gallery, London; Galerie Laurent de Puybaudet, Paris; Galerie Josine Bokhoven, Amsterdam; and Gerald Bland, New York. His work is conserved in the permanent collection of the British Museum.

  • Drawing Room of Jayne Wrightsman, 820 Fifth Avenue, New York
    By Pierre Bergian
    Located in New York, NY
While Jayne Wrightman’s taste was universally recognized as exquisite—she was a peerless collector and long served as a trustee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—the society grande dame and philanthropist chose to work with Parisian decorators Maison Jansen upon acquiring her palatial Fifth Avenue home. In fact, Jansen had already started; the apartment’s previous owner, private dealer Renée de Becker, had brought them in. Wrightsman and husband Charles continued with Jansen; upon principal Stephane Boudin’s death, they began working with Henri Samuel, thus beginning a long association. While the bones of the room owe much to Jansen, the decoration—the colors, the upholstery, and most of the furnishings—are Samuel. Shown here is the sprawling 31-foot-by-21-foot drawing...
