About the Item

Work on canvas : 61 x 43 cm Golden frame With frame : 70 x 52.7 x 4 cm This 19th-century portrait by an anonymous artist shows an elderly man seated at his desk, engrossed in writing. He is elegantly dressed - black jacket, matching vest, high collar and bow tie - suggesting a certain social or professional stature. The man stares at the viewer with a frank gaze, underlined by clear eyes and a slightly stern, yet wise expression. Around him, shelves filled with books and numbered files suggest an intellectual or administrative work environment. The atmosphere is hushed and serious, reinforced by the dark color palette and meticulous details: the texture of his skin, the whiteness of his sideburns, or the soft light that illuminates his face. He could be a notary, a scholar, an archivist or a man of letters, but the exact identity and function of the character remain undetermined. This vagueness leaves room for interpretation, and gives the painting a certain universality: that of a man at work, whose life is dedicated to study, knowledge management or writing.
