About the Item
Jay Rosenblum was a native of the Bronx who studied at Bard College and the Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He also passionately studied music and was a violinist in the Seventh Army Symphony in West Germany in the mid-1950s and taught at the School of Visual Arts. He later returned to NY and was active in Manhattan.
The artist experimented with the Visual Stipe Motif for most of his lifetime. He sought to correlate his big love for Chamber music sonatas with freely evolving color block in his art; both musical notes and color block transform into cohesive art forms. The vertical forms serve as vehicles for color. Rosenblum referred to his work as Free Association Color Development, describing his vibrant and expressive color block paintings. The artist explained in his own words:
"The vertical forms in my work serve as the vehicle for color and also become a dramatic means of achieving movement and deep space. This becomes possible through a great variation in the stripe thickness and the sudden emergence or disappearance of a particular band of color when it overlaps another." Rosenblum was selected by the City of New York to design and execute 2 major wall murals. In 1955, he was awarded the Carlos Lopez Memorial Prize in Painting from the Detroit Institute of Art.
The Latin phrase gradus ad Parnassum means "steps to Parnassus". It is sometimes shortened to gradus. The name Parnassus was used to denote the loftiest part of a mountain range in central Greece, a few miles north of Delphi, of which the two summits, in Classical times, were called Tithorea and Lycoreia.

Jay Rosenblum
Jay Rosenblum experimented with different versions of the "Visual Stripe motif" for more than thirty years. In the 1960's he developed a "hard-edge" style with "flat curtain forms" which had a clearly defined vertical emphasis. These colors as in our example move up and down the picture plane. Space is defined by shifts in color passages. As the artist explained in his own words: "The vertical forms in my work serve as the vehicle for color and also become a dramatic means of achieving movement and deep space. This becomes possible through a great variation in the stripe thickness and the sudden emergence or disappearance of a particular band of color when it overlaps another." Rosenblum was an ardent violinist who played for the Seventh Army Symphony in West Germany and who was also an art teacher at the School of Visual Arts. In his art Rosenblum sought to associate his great love for chamber music sonatas with his freely evolving vertical stripes of color. Rosenblum once stated: "When these elements engage themselves in the painting, there is a great visual excitement for me. A kinship with music, in a polyphonic sense, is very strong in that simultaneously one hears lines of "overlapping" music. In some mysterious way the composer can achieve this and it is equally mysterious and effective in painting when it happens." In much the same way that singular notes strung together create music, individual stripes of color together can be transformed into a complete art form. He thus viewed these blocks of color almost as separate notes in a piece of music that that when brought together would be transformed into a cohesive unit, resonating with a playfulness that added interest and energy to the picture. With colors Rosenblum attempted to select ones that when juxtaposed against or near one another would become "an exciting visual discovery". He would refer to such works as "free association color development". Rosenblum executed a number of these "hard-edge" paintings which included groupings of color clusters in both vertical and diagonal motifs. Jay Rosenblum was born in New York City in 1933. He attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1951-53, Harvard University in the summer of 1953 and Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 1953-1955. He received a M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. His paintings have appeared in numerous selected solo and group exhibitions in the USA and Italy. Rosenblum was awarded the Carlos Lopez Memorial Prize in painting from the Detroit Institute of Art in Detroit, Michigan in 1955 and the Painter of the Year Award from Larry Aldrich, Ridgefield, CT in 1970. He lived and worked in Manhattan for most of his life and sadly died in a tragic bicycle accident in 1989.

PHENOMENA Chinese Light Chalice 1989 Abstract Expressionist Watercolor, framed
By Paul Jenkins
Located in New York, NY
As a teen, Paul Jenkins worked with ceramicist James Weldon which led to a fascination with glazes; Jenkins cultivated and eventually achieved a similar effect in his paintings by mixing oil and enamel on canvas in the 50s. In 1937, Jenkins attended classes at the Kansas City Art Institute where he painted his first series of watercolors he called interior landscapes inspired by caves in the Ozarks. After serving in the US Naval Air Corps for 2 years, Jenkins moved to New York to study with Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Kantor at the Art Students League from 1948 to 1952. During those years, Jenkins met Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman.
In 1953 left for Paris where he discovered and was struck by the color density and luminosity in abstract oil works termed ébauches by Gustave Moreau and pastels by Odilon Redon. He began to experiment with poured paints in various thicknesses on canvas and paper and found this technique achieved luminosity of color which in its own way was comparable to that of Moreau and Redon. The next year, Jenkins added Winsor Newton pigments and chrysochrome, a viscous enamel paint, into his poured paintings, further enriching their color density and incandescence. The next major development in technique came in 1959 when he began using an ivory knife to guide the flow of paint. That same year, he also began to title his paintings Phenomena followed by a key word or phrase. A film on Jenkins' technique titled The Ivory Knife: Paul Jenkins at Work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art and received the Golden Eagle Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1966.
In 1954 Jenkins had his first solo exhibition in Paris where he met Martha Jackson, whose New York gallery included Jenkins in a group show the following year. In 1956, Martha Jackson Gallery held a solo exhibition of Jenkins’ work at which Divining Rod...

Roberto Lauro is a British-Swiss Post War & Contemporary artist who was born in 1932.
Roberto Lauro was born in 1932 in Gorey Harbor on the island of Jersey (Great Britain) the son of a Swiss mother, Rosa Ramseier, from Oberdiessbach / Emmental, Switzerland, and and Italian father Innocenzo Roberto Lauro, born in Mondovi, Italy. In 1941 he moved to Switzerland with his mother. 1949-1953 he lived in Gunten (Switzerland) where he did an Apprenticeship as a lithograph and offset printer and graphic designer in Thun. There he was introduced to the color theory of Johannes Itten by Hermann Oberli at the Bern School of Applied Arts. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a fine art printer in Norway where he was influenced by the color theory of Edvard Munch. These works bears the influence of Russian artist Andre Lanskoy, Tachisme and the Cobra artists Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret.
In 1955-1956 he worked as an offset printer in Amsterdam (Netherlands). Visit to the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs. In 1957 he returned to Gunten, Switzerland. Where he started working in printmaking and and oil painting. He resumed his studies at the Bern School of Applied Arts. He was greatly impacted and influenced by abstract art on the occasion of a large Paul KIee exhibition. In 1958 he moved to Zurich where he worked part-time work as an offset copyist; fulfilling graphic orders for advertising agencies. In 1962 he took his final examination as graphic designer at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. In 1980 he begins his development of three-dimensional picture objects, Sculpture, detachment from the canvas, using metal as a support and play space for light and color. By 1981 he has turned full time to fine art. He spends the next years growing and developing his considerable talent. Inspired by classical music, the rhythm, mood and lightness of which form the basis for the large swings and loops of his colorfully lacquered metal and blown glass sculptures. These are "pensieri", thought sketches that capture the emotions in countless versions. There is something dance-like about his rotating sculptures. Everything becomes music and the rhythm of colors. In 1988, after exhibitions in Europe, he has his first exhibitions in Atlanta and San Francisco (USA), In 1989 he does his first glass and metal sculptures at the Roberto Niederer glassworks, Hergiswil (Switzerland). In 1992 has a retrospective exhibition in the Tan Gallery, Zurich, and the Eleonore Austerer Gallery, San Francisco. They Publish a catalogue raisonne, Eine Retrospektive, covering a 45 year career. In 1993 he creates A Retrospective, a unique sculpture in a table top form that contains his catalogue raisonne and an original lithograph.
1993–1995 he begins work on a number of large scale public outdoor commissions, including Light Columns for a Bank building, and a commission of a sculpture-fountain in Oetwil am See. In 2001 he creates a wall sculpture entitled "Color Poems of the Yearly Cycle. A linen bound book enclosed in a unique plexi display with a one - of a - kind metal and glass sculpture, containing 12 linocuts each printed in colors and signed.
Roberto Lauro's sculptural work work is spontaneous and loaded with energy. The furrows, rifts, cracks and scars in the metal allow light to enter; it is then reflected back by the glass. His work is a clear statement of our times, uniting the intellect and the heart in search of the spiritual. Like the interplay of light and shadow, his sculpture combines fragile, transparent glass with solid, heavy iron. These colorful and luminous sculptures convey a powerful presence and emit vibrant positive energy. With their jagged exteriors and translucent cores, the spectacular sculptures created by the synergy of metal and glass are powerful - yet fragile. Lauro has created and mastered his own idiom and proven that through the artist sheer will and vision, seemingly incompatible materials such as iron and glass can indeed be combined. In 2004 he has an anniversary exhibition Light and Color, Love of Life on the island of birth, Jersey. Ceramic works (raku with glass inclusions). Roberto Lauro's works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Europe and the USA around the world, and he has also realized projects such as "KUNST AM BAU" in public spaces and for industry. He lives and works in Switzerland.
