The paintings of Thomas Sarrantonio seek to mediate between realms of external perception and internal reflection. They present themselves as meditations on nature and self. Choosing humble, often overlooked subject matter, such as the overgrown grasses at the edge of a field, he attempts to translate the dynamic processes of Nature into the stasis of physical matter on a painted surface. Small works are produced directly from Nature while large paintings are studio productions that utilize memory, experience, imagination and conceptual ideas to negotiate the terrain of contemporary painting. The paintings are offered to the viewer as templates to provoke active participation in the process of seeing and quiet contemplation of the act of consciousness.

In this new series of paintings, Moore explores themes of wanderlust and memory. From glowing neon signage, to sprawling landscapes and unique architectural elements, this exhibition is a visual road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. These paintings stem from Moore’s personal travels and open up a collective conversation about wanderlust. In these works, she revisits her former home of Los Angeles to shed a new light in juxtaposition to the bare California desert and the opulence of Las Vegas.
This exhibition reflects a shift to new subject matter as well as a new artistic chapter that has been evolving within her work over the last two years. Moore’s process has progressed to become larger in scale, and more delicate in detail. This series of paintings offer trompe de l’oeil moments in combination with gestural brush stokes that reveal the artists hand. With a more increased focus on architectural elements, this exhibition amplifies features that were often muted in her earlier landscapes.
With the exhibition title “All Those Who Wander”, Moore is leaving an option for the viewer to place themselves in the wanderlust narrative, or to observe it from afar. Moore believes we have a collective desire to explore and, in turn, we often daydream about our travels. This often creates a dream-like quality to our memories which results in a romanticized narrative within our minds. The reality of a place often doesn’t matter, it’s the memory of our experience there that sticks with us. We often like to sit a little longer with the most romantic and the most opulent visuals we have in our minds.
Beginning with Los Angeles noir, the viewer is introduced to old Hollywood architecture blended with images reflecting the known edginess of the city. Familiar Hollywood landmarks are explored in a new light and we are left with a subtle sense of nostalgia as the viewer moves through the works. The bright desert landscapes lead into the “in between”; these are the lands that are on the way to somewhere else. Just as important as the beginning or the end, the transitional parts of a road trip often leave space for the most enriching moments of pause and reflection. Greenfield-Sanders’ landscape paintings invite the viewer into nostalgia, to forge a connection to their own experience. Using found vintage photography as a starting point, she creates several iterations of each image, which she alters with pencil and watercolor, and finally paints over with oil. They emerge simultaneously familiar yet enigmatic. She elaborates, stating, “All of my paintings are based on amateur slides from seventy years ago. I am interested in the ‘comfortably familiar’ nature of the images and how the elapsed time allows them to ‘prickle with new meaning’ to connect that which was worth capturing with that which is worth painting, at present.” The paintings require a great deal of forethought and groundwork, but still appear unlabored and fresh. Her style of painting, which prizes color, representation and evocation, is activated by both individual experience and collective memory.
Isca Greenfield-Sanders (b. in 1978 in New York City) received her dual BFA and BA degree from Brown University. The artist lives and works in New York, NY.

Known as a Hudson River School painter, especially of mountain landscapes, Arthur Parton was well established in the New York art world where he exhibited at the National Academy of Design for more than half a century. He was born in Hudson, New York to a religious family supported by a cabinetmaker father. He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as a student of William Trost Richards, who remained a strong influence, and in 1862, his first exhibitions were in Philadelphia.
In 1864, he moved to New York City where he exhibited regularly with the National Academy of Design excepting 1869 when he spent a year in Europe and was influenced by the Barbizon style of painting.
In 1874, he and his wife moved into the Tenth Street Building in New York City, and he kept his studio there until 1893. In 1876, he gained much national notoriety at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition for his paintings November, Loch Lomond and Solitude.

This is an abstracted view of one of the historic basins. “Excited by the colour of the buildings I set out to create an abstracted sense of the place and the movement within”. Hoffbauer was born in Paris in 1875, the son of an Alsatian architect, artist and archaeologist who published Paris through the Ages. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon and Gustave Moreau, rubbing shoulders with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet, then won an Honorable Mention in the Salon of 1896 and academic prizes in 1898-99. At the Paris Universal Exposition he won a bronze medal. On a French government traveling scholarship called the Prix National du Salon, Hoffbauer discovered Italy, Greece and Egypt. Then the government purchased Champs de bataille in 1904 (Musée du Luxembourg). On a second scholarship in late 1909, Hoffbauer visited New York where he was greeted by his friend Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), the creator of the "Gibson Girl." It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.
The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.
The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).
Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room.
