Harmony
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Dark mountainous boulders stand firm alongside a whimsical, soft, colorful sea in this larger scale oil painting by Nelson White. White uses his palette knife to create his recognizable strokes, this time in purple tones—a less common color pallet than usual for White. Nelson H. White was born in New London, Connecticut in 1932. White has been surrounded by art and artists from the time he was born. He received his earliest art instruction from his grandfather, Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and his father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), both important American artists. The family lived in Waterford, Connecticut and the elder White had been an early member of the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Known for his paintings of the Connecticut landscape and shoreline, Henry Cooke White became a teacher to his son, Nelson Cooke White. Living with his parents at the Florence Griswold house in Old Lyme, he met some of the most important and influential artists of the day, Childe Hassam, Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman. Later, Nelson White's father began to take his family to summer on Shelter Island and became friendly with many of the artists of the Peconic colony...

"A Perkiomen October" Hand-Colored Photograph
Located in Soquel, CA
"A Perkiomen October" Hand-Colored Photograph Brightly oil paints colored black and white photograph of a pond by Wallace Nutting (American, 1861 - 1941). The viewer looks out across a glass pond, reflecting the scenery above. The pond is surrounded by trees that have been tinted in various shades of yellow, red, and green. Beyond the trees, puffy white clouds hang in a soft blue sky. Signed in the lower right, below the photograph, on the backing mat: Wallace Nutting Titled in the lower left, below the photograph, on the backing mat: A Perkiomen October Tag on verso from the artist. Presented in a wood frame with a tan backing mat. Frame size: 18.5"H x 22.5"W Image size: 10.5"H x 13"W Wallace Nutting (American, 1861-1941) was an American minister, photographer, artist, and antiquarian, who is most famous for his landscape photos of New England. He also was an accomplished author, lecturer, furniture maker, antiques expert and collector. His atmospheric photographs helped spur the Colonial Revival style. Nutting graduated from high school in Augusta, Maine. He studied at Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University, Hartford Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. He graduated from Harvard with the class of 1887. Nutting earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from Whitman College in 1893. He received an honorary doctor of Humanities from Washington & Jefferson College in 1938. Nutting began his career as a Congregational minister in several towns including Minneapolis, Seattle, and Providence and Fryeburg, Maine, but he was forced to retire at age 43 because of poor health. He suffered from neurasthenia, and turned to bicycling as a means of relaxation and improving his health. It was on these bicycle rides in the countryside that Nutting started taking photographs. In 1904 he opened the Wallace Nutting Art Prints Studio on East 23rd Street in New York. After a year he moved his business to a farm in Southbury, Connecticut. He called this place "Nuttinghame". In 1912 he moved the photography studio to Framingham, Massachusetts, in a home he called "Nuttingholme". That year he published a catalog of prints that was 97 pages and included about 900 images. By 1915, Nutting claimed to be earning $1,000 per day. Nutting's photographs ranged in subject and price to suit a variety of tastes. His catalog included pastoral scenes such as views of abbeys, cathedrals, bridges, mountains, flowers, and winding roads. One of his most common themes was "Colonials", which were photos of women...

"Winter Scene: Canal Near New Hope, Pennsylvania" Impressionist Snowy Landscape
Located in New York, NY
George Gardner Symons Winter Scene: Canal Near New Hope, Pennsylvania Signed lower left Oil on canvas 30 x 38 inches Provenance: Galleries Maurice Sternberg, Chicago, Illinois Private Collection Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, American 19th & 20th Century Paintings, 1976, Lot 121 Christie's New York, American Art, June 5, 1997, Lot 66 The Honorable Serena Perretti, Short Hills, New Jersey (acquired directly from the above) Estate of the above, 2023 A landscape and marine artist, George Symons was one of America's more noted plein-air painters who combined styles of impressionism and realism. His works are cited for their energy and simplicity, and he often did panoramic views. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1861, with the name of George Gardner Simon, but he changed his last name to Symons when he returned from study in England because of concern about anti-semitism. Not much is known about his early life. He first studied at the Chicago Art Institute where he became a close, life-long friend of William Wendt. They painted together in California and then in Cornwall, England in 1898. He also studied in Paris, and Munich and London, and joining a colony of artists at St. Ives, adopted the plein-air techniques of Julius Olsson, Adrian Stokes, and Rudolph Hellwag. He worked in Chicago as a commercial artist, and about 1903 returned to California with Wendt and built a studio in Laguna Beach and became active in western art societies including the California Art Club. He returned often, but maintained his primary studio in Brooklyn, New York, and also did a lot of painting in Colerain, Massachusetts. Among the collections where his work can be found is the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences; the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Fleischer Museum in Scottsdale, Arizona. Associations he was a member of include the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, the Institute of Arts and Letters, the Lotos, Century, and Salmagundi Clubs. He was also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Union Internationale des Beaux Arts et des Lettres. He painted entirely out-of-doors, frequently working in Arizona, doing desert landscape and the Grand Canyon views, which "were well received", but he is best known for his New England snow scenes, especially of the Berkshire Mountains...

"VESPERS" TEXAS HILL COUNTRY FOREST
Located in San Antonio, TX
Barbara Mauldin Fredericksburg Artist Image Size: 12 x 16 Frame: 16 x 20 Medium: Oil "Vespers" Barbara and her husband Chuck moved to Fredericksburg in 2005 after living many years in Louisiana, where she taught art at Baton Rouge Lutheran School. Soon after moving home to Texas, she began painting seriously. She has studied with Ian Roberts, Kevin Macpherson, Jill Carver, Lori Putnam, and (of course!) Chuck Mauldin. Barbara’s work has been accepted in several art events, such as the Women Artists of the West National Show, Contemporary Masters Invitational Art Show in Fredericksburg, the Mountain Oyster Club Art Show, the Plein Air Artists Colorado National Juried Art Exhibition, The Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX) “The Party” Art Exhibition and Sale, and others. Her paintings are characterized by color. “I like to emphasize the color that I see, as a creative and emotional response to the landscape.” She works with a limited palette, using a small number of pigments to mix colors, which results in beautiful color harmony. Barbara has focused her attention on the Texas landscape, especially on prickly pear cactus. Cactus is fun to paint. It has a multitude of interesting colors, which are an expression of the harshness of the environment and the amount of direct sun. In spring the colors are lighter and more mellow, and the flowers of late spring are a vibrant yellow and rose, sometimes orange. She enjoys plein air work, accepting the challenges of color, design, and the environment (critters and weather). Texas abounds with variety and inspiration; there is always another painting just around the corner! Her interest in art had always been a part of the fabric of her life. She works mainly in oil, and she also dabbles in pastels, watercolor, church banner...

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.

The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.

The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).

Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us. Influenced by modern life and steeped in social commentary, Straus’s landscape paintings make us see our surroundings anew.

Whether you’re seeking works by the world’s most notable names or those authored by underground legends, find a vast collection of landscape paintings on 1stDibs.
