About the Item
Abraham Hulk (british/dutch) 1813 - 1897
"Off the Dutch Coast" -Oil on canvas, signed and framed.
Painting has been re-lined some time ago, more recently, we have had it cleaned.
Abraham Hulk has become increasingly popular in recent years and there is a strong demand for his marine works. He was a pupil of the celebrated portrait painter J A Dailwaille but turned to marine painting. He studied at the Amsterdam Academy from 1828 to 1834, visited the USA and held several successful exhibitions before returning to Holland and then finally settling in London in 1870. He worked in London for 27 years and thus qualified himself to be classified as a British marine artist. He is mainly noted for his Dutch estuary scenes and his work is typically Dutch in its influence, conception and execution. He is a master of atmosphere in romantic calms.
During his time in London he exhibited 3 paintings at the Royal Academy and 19 at the British Institute. He also exhibited at Amsterdam, The Hague and Leeuwarden between 1843 and 1868.
His son, also called Abraham, was a competent landscape painter and another son William, a cattle painting specialist; they also lived in England.
