About the Item

Haystacks by Abraham Walkowitz (1878-1965) Oil on canvas 14 x 20 inches unframed (35.56 x 50.8 cm) 19 ½ x 25 ½ inches framed (49.53 x 64.77 cm) Signed on lower right Description: Abraham Walkowitz studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. He went on to exhibit at the 291 Gallery and developed a close relationship with Alfred Stieglitz, who propelled him into New York’s Modernist art movement. Walkowitz was inspired by European Modernism, such as the works of Cezanne, along with Cubism and the European avant-garde. His exhibitions at the 1913 New York Armory Show and the 1916 Forum Exhibition further solidified him as part of the Modernist movement. In this oil painting, Abraham Walkowitz depicts a serene, rural scene, in which his influences and Modernist origins are visualized. The bright shades of yellows and oranges make the work lively and bountiful, with hay stretching for miles into the canvas. Only some hints of green are used in the foreground to disrupt the monochromatic colors. Walkowitz leaves his works unresolved, the linework highlighted in its fluidity and jittery nature.

Winter Scene
By Walter Launt Palmer
Located in New York, NY
In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
