This is probably the largest work created by Achille Dovera, presumed to be intended for an important patron.
A small preparatory sketch on wood with the same scene passed on the market of the 'work.
The work sees in the center foreground a large flock of sheep passing along a path, accompanied by some shepherds; the beasts emerge, shrouded in a large cloud of dust, from a passageway amid rich vegetation, in flat countryside in the background of which, however, mountainous peaks rise.
Milanese painter Achille Dovera is considered a high representative of 19th-century naturalist and genre painting.
A landscape painter, Dovera on a formal level maintains contact with phenomenal reality, which is reproduced precisely, although the role of color and light are fundamental; his brushstrokes
moved and fast give freshness and immediacy to the scene without, however, disrupting the forms.
The large painting is presented in beautiful coeval gilded wooden frame.
