About the Item

Achille Vertunni (1826 - 1897) Fishermen at dawn Oil on canvas applied on masonite, 110 x 61 cm Framed, 132 x 85 cm Signed lower left: A. Vertunni Rome This work is signed by Neapolitan artist Achille Vertunni (1826-1897), an important exponent of 19th-century realism. Coming from a wealthy family in the Neapolitan city, he decided to pursue a career as an artist, going against the wishes of his parents, who wanted him to be an architect; he attended the Royal Academy and later landed at the school of Giuseppe Bonolis, his future teacher, from whom he learned the realist lesson and in whose school he was able to find young colleagues with whom he could share both artistic and political experiences, going so far as to participate in the revolutionary uprisings that broke out in Naples in 1848. Anti-Academicism, together with a general rejection of neoclassical formalism, were the first indicators that traced his maturity, which resulted in subjects related to the Romantic tradition first and in paintings with the landscape increasingly the protagonist later. Highlights include Pia de' Tolomei and Dante in the Forest, a work still linked to historical landscape painting, while views of towns, villages or glimpses of nature range from his Campania region, through Venice and the villages of its lagoon and on to the countryside around Rome, the city to which he moved in 1853. Here he founded his own atelier and engaged in setting up in his own home, a studio equipped with a veritable collection of objects, furniture and works of art from all periods, much appreciated by clients, customers and colleagues who were fortunate enough to visit. His fame reached international dimensions, meeting with the appreciation of the Italian and European upper middle class especially for his veristic subjects where the landscape dominates the human figure without supplanting it altogether but, rather, complementing it and achieving enhancement and measure. Again, the two fishermen, caught against the light during an iridescent sunset, appear to be more than mere outlines: the layout of the scene both from a point of view of symmetries and from a thematic point of view, seems to necessitate the little boat docking at one of the poles. In addition to the thematic issues, the technical ones should be appreciated especially in the layered rendering of the different hues starting from the shining reflections of waves to the darker trails of clouds in the center of the sky. The streaking of the brushstrokes lends three-dimensionality and makes the aquatic element vibratile and animated, while in the upper part the different parts of the vault of heaven appear divided but interpenetrated at the same time.
