About the Item
Wonderful early 20th Century seascape of the coast of Maine "Rocks near Pemaquid Lighthouse" by Ada Romer Shawham (American, 1865 - 1947), circa 1920. Signed lower right corner with initials and attribution/title label on verso. Condition: Good, Professionally cleaned with old yellowed varnish removed; corner and edge wear consistent with age/use. Presented in vintage gilt-toned frame. Image size: 7.75"H x 11.25"
Ada Romer was a member of a pioneer family whose father arrived with the Gold Rush. Her most famous work was a large canvas of the heads of 40 painters, writers and musicians who were her contemporaries. Her marriage to James Shawhan ended in divorce. She died in Oakland, CA on Sept. 14, 1947.
