About the Item
Based in Kent, UK, Adam De Ville says -
I am a self taught painter of landscapes, cityscapes, still life, abstract and portraits. Painting is about storytelling, feeling, character and the moment. I’m interested in painting how a place, person or object moves me. I paint about my experiences, about the duality of feelings I have when I revisit a memory or stand in a scene I’m going to paint. It’s like anchors a sails pulling in different direction. And It’s this tension that fascinates me, between displacement and belonging.
I like to work in terms of rhythm and movement, painting in the moment following a preliminary sketch, impulsive layers of paint and scraffito, generally using mixed media oils, pencil, ink and charcoal.
My influences are Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine, Leon Kossoff, Kyffin Williams, Frank Auerbach, amd street graffiti
Award winner: Wales Contemporary, Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours annual exhibition, Royal Cambrian Academy of art annual exhibition and Royal Birmingham society of artists.
Recent shows include The Pastel Society and ING Discerning Eye at the Mall Galleries, London, and Bath Society of Artists annual exhibition.
Adam de Ville
Adam de Ville is a self taught artist (and actor) based in Kent, UK. Currently working with oil paint as his primary medium, this whimsically named collection captures views of the British Isles in a fond and playful fashion. Both abstract and absurd in nature, his work has led him to The 2018/19 “Sunday Times Watercolour Competition”, the 2019 “Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Portrait Prize Exhibition” and the 2020 “Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours Annual Exhibition” ”I prefer to begin a painting with a strong idea, but then see where the moment takes me. Some of the work is more deliberate, but I aim to keep an element of risk or chance. I love finding a face for the first time, or a place caught in the moment. I don’t have any particular limit on subject matter, but I like exploring familiar aspects of popular culture and reoccurring themes of displacement and belonging. Storytelling is an essential part of the work.”

Place Pigalle
By Lucien Génin
Located in London, GB
'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided.
About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer...
