About the Item

Point Lobos Cove, Carmel California by Adelaide Bartleme Point Lobos Cove circa 1940s by Carmel artist Adelaide Bartleme, (American, 1881-1973). The niece of a well known New York artist and teacher of fine art who came to California, Adelaide was born in River Forest, Cook, Illinois 1880-1881 and was a school teacher. She traveled to California to study with her Aunt Adeline Therese Bartleme. Image 16"H x 20"W Frame, 20.5"H x 24.5"W x 1.5"D Carmel, the Bartelme artist family history: Miss Adeline Theresa Bartelme, which occurred at Hill Top, the Carmel Highlands home she shared for the past thirteen years with her sister, Judge Mary Bartelme, her niece, Miss Adelaide Bartelme, there came to a close a long active and inspiring life said the "Cymbal". Miss Bartelme was born in New York City on January 9, 1852, the second in a family of six children. She accompanied her family to Chicago in 1858 and lived in the city for the next seventy-five years, serving for Well over a quarter of a century, as an art instructor in the Chicago His schools. The impression she left upon her pupils and her colleagues was a deep and lasting one, and throughout the years since her retirement, many of them regularly corresponded with her. Before leaving River Forest Miss Bartelme expressed her willingness to go to California only if she could return for annual visits. However, the lure of California, the views of the Santa Lucia hills and her garden from the east; the shore line from the Big Sur from her south window, and a western view of Yankee Point and Point Lobos, entirely reconciled Miss Bartelme to permanently remain in the West.
