SCHULTZ Adrien (1851 / 1931)
French painter - Barbizon School
The son of a Parisian bookseller-publisher, he began working in his father's company, while practicing drawing and painting, often on the banks of the Marne. Noted by landscape artist Louis Émile Dardoize, he continued his apprenticeship in his studio, then in that of painter Hector Hanoteau. He is very close to Narcisse Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876) and Léon Richet (1847-1907), his masters.
Located in Montigny-sur-Loing, where he worked for some time in the workshop of ceramist Eugène Schopin, he painted landscapes of the forest of Fontainebleau, of river banks (Loing s/Marne) or of pond, and also executed charcoal and ceramics, which he exhibited at the Salon from 1876. His paintings, often spontaneous, follow the tradition of painters of the Barbizon school.
In New York, he collaborated with Paul Philippoteaux to create the Panorama of the Battle of Gettysburg. After working days in the United States, England and Belgium (1886-1889), which enabled him to establish useful contacts with the artistic circles of these countries, Schulz devoted himself mainly to painting. A member of the Société des artistes français since 1883, he was also, twenty years later, one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne alongside Félix Vallotton, Albert Lebourg or Eugène Carrière. Adrien Schulz is still a member of the “Salon d’Hiver”.
A few months after his death, the Salon d’Automne devoted him a retrospective in 1931. A retrospective of his work was held in Montigny-sur-Loing in 1982.
