About the Item

A French Impressionist oil on canvas view of a river in parkland by the noted French artist Albert Uriet. The painting is signed and dated bottom right and is presented in a fine carved and gilt frame. This is a very early and rare work by this artist heavily inspired by the Impressionists of the 19th Century. This exquisite painting vividly captures an Impressionist riverscape, seamlessly blending elements of nature with artistic flair. The scene unfolds with a serene river that meanders through the landscape, its surface reflecting the soft, dappled light. The verdant hues of trees transition into warm reds, oranges, and yellows, perhaps signalling the very first arrival of fall. Intricate details of leaves and branches frame the river, guiding the viewer's eye towards the distant horizon. The play of light and shadow, along with the meticulous brushwork, conveys a sense of tranquillity and depth. The painting's textured surface adds a tactile quality, enhancing its realism. Unique in its composition, this piece captures both the calm and dynamism of nature, offering an immersive visual experience that evokes the tranquil beauty of an autumn day. The artwork stands as a testament to the artist's skill in rendering natural landscapes with emotive precision. Albert Uriet attended the School of Decorative Arts on rue d'Ulm in Paris. After an exhibition at the Galerie André, rue des Saints-Pères, he joined Ruepp, the furniture workshop of a Swiss German based on rue Bergère. During the 1914-1918 war, Albert Uriet was mobilised however in 1917, Uriet illustrated "The Diligent Warrior" that Paulhan, who he met during war service, published at his own expense. In 1918, he made a few drawings for a Parisian newspaper. Then, he joined Deberny-Peignot (a typeface foundry) and became friends with the poster artist Cassandre, whose real name was André Mouron. In 1920, Uriet became editorial secretary of La Vie (a small monthly magazine about the colonies and distributed by Crès from 1912 to 1942). In 1925, he rented a castle in Saint-Vigord to run a boarding house. It was there that he worked on the illustrations of "Le Grand Meaulnes", by Alain-Fournier, on behalf of the Association of Bibliophile Doctors (first illustrated edition). He then specialized in the illustration of many children's books in the Pour tous collection, of the Mame house, in Tours, also publishing four tales of which he was the author at the same time as the illustrator. During the Occupation of WWII, the clergy of Brittany having sheltered "The Great Hours of the Duchess Anne of Nantes" in the cathedral of Tours, the house of Mame, in agreement with the archbishopric, was inspired by this jewel to create a missal whose illustration was entrusted to Albert Uriet. In 1943-1944, he also worked on colour illustrations for the works of Karl May, a German author of adventure novels. He printed "Les bois de l'imagerie populaire de la collection René Saulnier" in sixteen copies, using old typefaces from his personal collection.
