"Red Schoolhouse" is a colorful landscape and schoolhouse by American Impressionist painter Albert Van Nesse Greene. The painting is an 8" x 10" pastel on sandpaper, matted, framed, and signed "AV Greene" in the lower right. Provenance: Private Collection, Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Born in Jamaica, New York in 1887, Albert Van Nesse Greene (American, 1887 - 1971) had a long and thorough art education. He studied at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; The Art Students League, New York; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere. He lived in Chester County and painted many landscapes there, as well as in nearby Bucks County. His paintings were exhibited extensively in the United States and France. Examples of his work can be found in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Gallery of Art among many others. He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club, Society of Independent Artists, and the Yellow Springs Artists Association in Chester County. He exhibited with the Society of Washington Artists, the Pennsylvania Academy, and the Salons of America.

Albert Van Nesse Greene was born in Jamaica, NY and moved to Philadelphia in 1917. He served during World War I and was severely injured during his deployment. In the 1920s he traveled to France and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He painted sailboats and harbors in Concarneau and became friends with other American painters such as, Edgar Payne. While abroad, Greene was greatly influenced by the work of Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. The French Impressionists influenced Greene's strong use of pastels; evident in the palette of his artwork. While abroad, Greene learned the technique of using flint or sand paper as the ground for his pastels, a practice widespread among French draftsmen.
