About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. With Dancing Light, Sloane Square, Alex Rennie delivers a joyous celebration of light and shadow at play beneath a summer canopy. Painted in oil on linen, this lively street scene feels as though it’s caught mid-breath—the moment when leaves flicker above café tables and sunlight flickers in patches along the pavement. The square is alive with people, movement, and dappled energy.
Rennie’s brushwork dances along with the scene itself, leaning into his expressive impressionist style. He doesn’t render details rigidly—instead, shapes melt into each other with painterly confidence. The tree at the centre becomes a grand anchor, grounding the vibrant foreground while pushing the eye toward the soft architectural backdrop. There’s a rhythm to the composition, a syncopated harmony between sun-drenched stone and flickering leaf.
The colour palette sparkles with warm yellows, leafy greens, pale lavenders, and deep browns. Sunlight filters through branches in golden flecks, bouncing off red awnings and warm building façades. This isn’t just a painting of a place—it’s a painting of a sensation. Rennie captures that fleeting moment when the light feels almost alive, reminding us that beauty is often found in passing glances.
Artist Biography:
Born in London in 1977, Alex Rennie is a contemporary artist specializing in oil painting, working across a diverse range of styles from urban realism to geometric abstraction.
Over his 24-year career, Rennie has been dedicated to painting his home city, London, capturing its ever-changing skyline, dynamic streets, and reflective waterways. The city’s constant construction and regeneration serve as endless inspiration, offering new structures and shifting light effects that evolve from minute to minute and season to season.
Following in the footsteps of masters like Turner, Monet, and Canaletto, Rennie narrows his focus to specific streets and stretches of water, exploring their changing atmospheres and shifting dynamics. Whether sketching from dizzying viewing platforms, riverbeds at low tide, or along the Thames Path, his work reflects a deep obsession with capturing fleeting light at dawn and dusk.
Rennie studied Fine Art Painting (BA Hons) at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education (1997–2000) after completing a BTEC Foundation in Art and Design at Wimbledon School of Art (1996–1997). His work has been widely exhibited both internationally and domestically, including a solo exhibition on Cork Street with Waterhouse & Dodd.
His paintings have been selected for prestigious competitions, including:
John Moores Painting Prize
BP Portrait Prize Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery
Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize
ING Discerning Eye Exhibitions

“Over my 24 year career, I’ve been painting my home city of London. The capital has always been of great inspiration to me and I’ve been charting the ever-changing skyline over many paintings.
The constant construction and regeneration provides new edifices to reflect the myriad light effects which change from minute to minute and season to season.
In the footsteps of greats such as Turner, Monet and Canaletto, I have narrowed my focus on particular streets and stretches of water to truly explore the changing atmospheres and shifting dynamics.
I can be found up on the dizzying viewing platforms, down on the riverbed at low tide with the mudlarks or pacing the Thames path with a sketchbook in hand. Capturing the fleeting light at dawn and dusk is my endless obsession.”- Alex Rennie
