Tulips are recognized worldwide as harbingers of spring. Their widespread popularity has led to them becoming a perennial muse for artists, a symbol of spring, and the subject of vibrant, nature-inspired landscapes. Their almost ubiquitous presence in both life and art makes one wonder where they come from, what their historical and cultural significance is, and how their use by artists has changed in their work. The color of tulips also has symbolic meaning. For example, red tulips express love, while white tulips are a plea for forgiveness. A purple flower indicates deep respect and friendship, while a lilac tulip symbolizes the fidelity of a loved one. My painting depicts tulips of all colors. I painted this bouquet in an impressionistic manner, using impasto brushstrokes and contrasting colors. It is a true breath of spring.
