About the Item

Artwork sold with frame (73 x 63 cm) Alexandre Étienne Wilhelm Jan de Spengler was born in Paris in 1893 to a Dutch father and French mother and died in Geneva in 1973. He was both painter and engraver, also involved in theatre and scenography. He was active especially in Geneva and Paris. He studied art at the Beaux-Arts in Geneva and also trained in theatrical arts under Françoise Chantre. Spengler’s early career included acting and stage-work: he collaborated with Georges Pitoëff in theatrical productions around 1916-1919, creating decor for plays and performing. Over time he shifted weight toward the visual arts. His oeuvre includes interior scenes, depictions of the world of performance (theatre, circus, dance), landscapes, and domestic environments. He worked in multiple media: oil painting, drawings, engraving, book illustration, and also decoration for textiles and ceramics. His style often evokes mood, light, and atmosphere, with attention to intimate settings and human figures in performance or repose. He also produced prints (linogravures, lithographs) and illustrations. In later years his artistic activity was reduced by illness (Dupuytren’s disease), and he held a part-time position at the Library of Art and Archaeology in Geneva from 1955 until 1972. He also designed stage sets and decor (e.g. for the Grand Théâtre in Geneva in 1927). Spengler is remembered for bridging visual and theatrical art, and for his sensitivity to interior, performative, and atmospheric scenes.
