A superb painting of a sunset over a Highland loch by Alfred de Breanski Snr. Cattle can be seen taking to the water whilst the rest of the herd grazes on the nearby bank. To the bottom left, an aquatic bird breaks away from its flock to land on the lake as the sun begins to set.
Alfred de Breanski was a landscape painter born in the St Pancras area of London, the eldest son of Leopold de Breanski, a language professor and his wife Eugenie who were both from France. His brother Gustave and his sister Julie were also talented artists. The family settled in Greenwich from where Breanski began his artistic career as a landscape painter and would go on frequent visits to the scenic areas of Britain and Wales. His work was highly accomplished for his age and he started showing his paintings at provincial fine art exhibitions including those held at St Andrews Hall, Norfolk in 1871.
He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1872 where his works were favourably received, exhibiting there until 1918. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Cambrian Academy. Other exhibitions included the Bristol Fine Arts Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Crystal Palace Galleries, Dudley Gallery and Arthur Tooth & Sons. On 2 July, 1873 he married the Welsh artist Annie Roberts at Llantysilio, whom he met on one of his painting trips. Together they had seven children and two of his sons, Alfred Fontville Breanski (1877- 1957) and Arthur Breanski also became artists. From 1873, he lived in Lewisham at Llantysilio House and then 6, Lime Villas until 1879 when the family moved to Hedsor View in Cookham, Berkshire.
By the late 1880’s Breanski had moved back to the capital, eventually returning to the Greenwich area where he kept a studio at his home in Luton Place. Although Breanski lived most of his life in London, he travelled around the country painting dramatic views, particularly of the Scottish Highlands and Wales as well as the Lake District, Thames valley and Kent. His works were highly praised by art critics and he enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime, allowing him to become a property owner. He was elected member of the Royal Cambrian Academy in 1884 and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1890. A special exhibition of his work was held by Frost and Reed in 1897. He died in Dartford in 1928.
He is regarded as one of England’s most accomplished landscape and many examples of his paintings are held museums and galleries including the Ferens Art Gallery, Glasgow Museum, Grosvenor Museum, Hartlepool Museum, Laing Art Gallery, Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art, Paisley Museum, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Sheffield Museum, Southampton City Art Gallery and Torre Abbey Museum.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Alfred de Breanski Sr.
Widely regarded as one of England’s most accomplished landscape artists, British painter Alfred de Breanski Sr. is known by collectors for his realistic depictions of the rugged, isolated beauty of the Scottish Highlands and Welsh mountains.
Born in 1852 in Greenwich, England, de Breanksi grew up in an artistic family. His elder brother was the noted seascape painter Gustave de Breanski and his younger sister Julie trained as an artist.
Many of de Breanksi’s paintings feature animals such as sheep and cattle, which he painted grazing along the grassy banks of the River Thames or in the undulating fields of Wales and Scotland. He was influenced by the likes of renowned British painter John Constable, making similar use of texture, light and color in his landscape paintings.
De Breanski debuted his works at the Royal Academy in London in 1872, where he continued to exhibit until 1918. He also showcased at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Cambrian Academy in Wales.
In 1873, de Breanski married Welsh painter Annie Roberts, and together they had seven children. Two of their children — Alfred de Breanski Jr. and Arthur de Breanski — would follow their parents’ footsteps and become artists. In 1880, de Breanksi became a Freeman of the City of London, and in 1928, he died in London.
Today, de Breanski’s paintings can be seen in museums and galleries throughout Britain, including at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, the Southampton City Art Gallery and the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in Brighton and Hove.

A lovely landscape painting of sheep on a coastal cliff by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. The sheep and her two lambs are depicted against the backdrop of the sea with shipping and chalk cliffs in the distance. The location is likely to be the Devon coast, an area Jones visited often.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874, he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
