About the Item

Large summer landscape by the Swedish artist Alfred Thörne (1850–1916). A footpath leads toward sunlit meadows and trees along the edge of the canal/lake; in the distance a farmstead is just visible behind some trees. Signed “A. Thörne,” oil on canvas. Verso inscribed “Julidag” (Day in July) and “Motiv vid Sörkvarn, Strömsholms kanal” (Motif from Sörkvarn, Strömsholm Canal). Alfred Thörne was born in 1850 in Östergötland, and died in Stockholm in 1916. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Kungliga Konstakademien) from 1874 to 1880 under Per Daniel Holm, receiving the Academy’s Royal Medal in 1880 and becoming an agré (associate) in 1881. In 1884 he was awarded a travel scholarship and undertook study journeys in Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium (including time in Düsseldorf and Munich) before returning to Sweden in 1886. He supported himself at times as a drawing teacher. His favored motifs were Swedish landscapes—especially Mälardalen, Dalarna, and Bergslagen—and he also painted portraits and genre scenes. Thörne’s travel stipend (1884–86) exposed him to Central European painting—particularly in Düsseldorf and Munich—while his Swedish landscapes frequently depict lake districts, mill towns, and waterways tied to the Bergslagen iron region, aligning with the present canvas’ “day in July” motif. About Sörkvarn and the Strömsholm Canal Sörkvarn is a lock site on the Strömsholm Canal in Hallstahammar, Västmanland County (central Sweden), The Sörkvarn locks are notable locally; the canal itself runs along the Kolbäcksån river system from Smedjebacken south to Borgåsund/Lake Mälaren, passing through the municipalities of Fagersta, Surahammar, and Hallstahammar. Thörne spent some summers around 1890 in the area of Hallstahammar where he rented a summer house. Thörne participated in numerous exhibitions and some of them were: Nordic Exhibition, Copenhagen (1888) Gothenburg Exhibition (1891) World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago (1893) IX Internationale Kunst-Ausstellung, Glaspalast, Munich (1905) — exhibited Wasserfall in Lappland Joint exhibition with Olof Hermelin, Stockholm (1910) A memorial exhibition was held at Konstnärshuset, Stockholm (1916) Thörne’s works are represented in: Nationalmuseum, Stockholm Nordiska museet, Stockholm Norrköpings Konstmuseum Östergötlands museum Sundsvalls museum Gävle museum

Motif From Långälven in Värmland, Sweden.
Located in Stockholm, SE
This enchanting Swedish painting, dated circa 1890, is believed to depict the tranquil waters of Långälven in Värmland, a testament to Ohlson's prowess in capturing the essence of the Swedish countryside. The scene is a gentle narrative, where we witness a family moment frozen in time. Parents stand by their daughter on a wooden dock, poised to embark on a journey across the reflective waters. The young girl, dressed in period attire, appears eager and curious, a universal symbol of youth's anticipation for adventure. Her parents, dressed in the fashion of the late 19th century, exude a sense of calm and assurance. Ohlson's brushwork brings the scene to life with a delicate interplay of light and shadow, mirroring the cloud-speckled sky on the lake's surface. The background is dotted with other vessels, suggesting the shared pleasure of the day's end on the water. Oscar Ohlson (1847–1912), born in Linneryd, Småland, and later settling in Borås, was a multifaceted artist who, after pursuing law, found his true calling in the arts. A student of Alfred Wahlberg...
