Many sources cite Andre Gisson as a French painter, but in fact he was a struggling painter in New York City who decided to enhance his reputation by claiming he was French and born earlier (1910) to be more closely aligned with the founders of the Impressionist movement. His real name, according to his son-in-law, Anthony Winston, was Anders Gittelson.
Following is an obituary of the artist from the New York Times Classifieds, 8/24/2003:
GITTELSON--Anders. A leading American Realist painter, he died on July 28 in Atlanta after a long illness. He was 81. Gittelson, whose brush name was Gisson, was born in 1921 in Brooklyn. He graduated from the Pratt Institute and was a Captain in the Army during World War II. Over four decades, his one-man shows extended from New York, Washington, Texas and California to London, Paris and Tokyo.
His work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Triton Museum of Art, in North Carolina. Among his private collectors were President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham. He lived and worked in Westport, Connecticut for 25 years prior to his illness. He was pre-deceased by his sons Glen and David Gittelson and survived by his daughter Cathy Gittelson Winston of Atlanta and his stepchildren Gwen Pier of New York, Bruce Graham of Fairfield, Conn., and Eric Putzig of Bali, Indonesia. André Gisson
André Gisson was born 'Anders Gittelson' in 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. A widely-collected American Impressionist painter, he is known for landscape, still life, portrait and figure paintings. In order to be seen as belonging to the French Impressionist movement, he claimed to be a Frenchman born in 1910, and adopted the artist name 'André Gisson'. He lived in New York, Westport, Connecticut and France for much of his life, and traveled widely. He studied at the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York. After graduation, he joined the United States Army and become a captain during World War II. Gisson continued his studies in Europe, where he came under the influence of the great French impressionists. Upon his return to New York, he adapted the style and technique of impressionism and used small, broken brushwork and soft and vibrant colors. Gisson's landscapes and beach scenes depict the French countryside, where he painted every summer, and the region around Lake Mahopac in upstate New York, where he lived for many years. Gisson's still life compositions show a Japanese influence in his work; whereas the French influence is more pronounced in his landscapes and figures. Several of Gisson’s paintings have been published and distributed internationally. His works have been exhibited in leading art galleries throughout the country for over four decades, as a solo show extended from New York, Washington, Philadelphia, Texas and California, also overseas locations in London, Paris and Tokyo. His work are part of the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Triton Museum of Art, in North Carolina. Among his private collectors were President Lyndon B. Johnson and W. Somerset Maugham. Gisson died in 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was listed in The Artist's Yearbook (p. 332, 2000), Artists in the Southwest Art (p. 64, 1993) and Who Was Who in American Art (p. 1296, 1999).

Charles Henry Miller was a noted artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor called him, "The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island."
Miller was educated at Mount Washington Collegiate Institute, and graduated in medicine at the New York Homeopathic Institute in 1864. Before his graduation, he had occasionally painted pictures, and in 1860 he exhibited The Challenge Accepted at the National Academy of Design, in New York City.
He lived in Queens at the summer estate, Queenslawn, originally purchased by his parents. He went abroad in 1864 and again in 1867, and was a pupil in the Bavarian Royal Academy at Munich under the instruction of Adolf Lier.
After the 1874 death of his father, Jacob Miller, who was a wealthy architect and builder, Miller received a large inheritance that allowed him to paint as an independent artist for the remainder of his long life. He worked seriously and exhibited regularly, including at international exhibitions.
The majority of his oil paintings depict Long Island subjects, especially those in and around Queens Village. Fed up with the development of the eastern part of Queens (present-day Nassau County), he began to spend part of his summers in East Marion, Long Island, c. 1910. Here he spent his time sketching and painting the surrounding areas.
In 1885 he published The Philosophy of Art in America, using the pseudonym Carl De Muldor (he was descended from the De Muldor family).
His work was recognized: in 1873, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design and an academician in 1875. He served as president of the New York Art Club in 1879 and of the American Committee at the Munich International Exposition in 1883.
