About the Item

This is a post-impressionist oil on canvas of the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte by noted French painter André Lauran housed in a custom made hand carved and gilt wood frame. Signed lower right. Originally purchased at an art gallery in Paris in the late nineties. Sight size 14.5 " x 17.5" Born in Valence in 1922, Lauran studied painting at an art school in Valence and later at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Despite the destruction caused by the war, the 1940s were important formatively for Lauran. In 1944, he moved to Paris and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Surindépendants. In 1946 he met and received encouragement from André Lhote, went on to win a state travel grant, and sold his painting "Le kiosque de Valence" to the art museum in Valence. That same year, he met Pierre Bonnard at his home in Le Cannet -- a meeting which would deeply affect Lauran's approach to the use of color. In 1948 Lauran joined with other Lyonnais painters to form the movement "Sanzism;" which, like its name suggests, was a rejection of current artistic trends as well as the conflict between abstraction and figuration. After his marriage in 1950 to fellow painter Véronique Veron, he and his wife lived in the United States for two years. Upon his return, he was appointed professor of drawing at three Parisian colleges while continuing to exhibit his works in salons, art galleries, and museum exhibitions including a solo retrospective at the Château d'Aubenas in 1964. It was during that year that he changed the spelling of his name from Laurent to Lauran and moved to Lagny-sur-Marne. He died there in 2009.

Painting is in overall good condition. Paint is overall stable with some slight craquelure and likely very small specks of paint loss. Losses to gilt on edges of wood frame. Painting not examined under black light. Presents well.
