About the Item

1970s fauvist watercolour of a forest glade by Belgian artist André Pierard. Not signed but acquired from his estate along with others of his works. A beautiful painting of a path winding its way through a forest glade. The colours are muted and autumnal in tones of ochre, mauve and sienna. The relaxed and muted colour washes are contrasted by the addition of strong dark lines outlining the individual trees and the pathway giving a sense of energy and flow to the composition. The trees are highly stylised almost leaflike in appearance and the foliage underfoot has been cleverly achieved using an application by sponge. We are invited to walk the path and surround ourselves in an autumnal wonderland. André Pierard (Belgian artist) had a second home near Cotignac in Provence in the south of France and would spend his summers there during the 1970s setting up his easel and painting Provencal inspired scenes. His work was quite extensive and eclectic as he produced landscapes, portraits and abstracts. Highly colourful and vibrant these original works make a great impact.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
