André Roubaud
"Ste. Victoire" Colorful Impressionist view of Sainte-Victoire Mountain Painting

Mid-20th Century

About the Item

A strong Post-Impressionist oil on canvas painting by André Roubaud depicting the Sainte-Victoire Mountain in France, executed in wonderful colors and gestural brush strokes. With magnificent details, this painting is a wonderful example of Roubaud’s work, showing vigor, enthusiasm, and a personality all of its own, achieving this look through the use of vivid colors and thick texture. Roubaud is quick to capture his excitement onto the canvas with the use of vibrant colors like bright yellow, green, red and blue. Drawing the viewer’s eyes into the hues on this piece which exudes an expressive use of shape and form of the Sainte-Victoire Mountain, which has been recognized as a Grand Site de France since 2004, also a dear subject of the painter Cézanne portraying this French’s natural heritage. Also with the use of a palette knife, Roubaud is able to move the thick paint around his canvas, therefore creating a strong texture, giving the painting such a depth, that as a viewer, it would feel as if you can almost walk into the scene portrayed. The piece is signed by the artist lower right and titled on verso, it comes housed in a decorated giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 13 x 16 inches Frame measures 20 x 23 inches André Roubaud was born in France in 1929 and he began his artistic career as a painter from a very early age well before he attended art school, as he enjoyed painting the subjects that surrounded him like landscapes, flowers and people. After receiving his art education in Paris at "Art Libre", his work soon began to become recognized and also won prizes from his hometown region in France, and later in 1957, André began exhibiting in Paris and Marseille, then achieving international recognition having exhibited in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, San Francisco and Montreal, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, and Canada while winning numerous honors during his career. André Roubaud’s paintbrush is a reflection of his soul, as in each painting he pictorially describes the Provence he grew up in with the grace of its natural beauty, almost as he would like for the viewer to see into his soul when appreciating his work. As Jean-Claude Gaudin, Senator of the Bouches-du-Rhône expressed about André’s works “Reality and dreams, realism and poetry, combine in his eyes and by his hand to move us”. PROVENANCE: Private Collection Carmel, California; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
