Painted on location at the ancient Roman site of Pompeii.
Painted in a lose impressionist style capturing the light, colors and architectural forms and spaces of the ancient building remains. Gradwell attempts to capture the essence of the place . Essential, miminal also Archetypal in a fleeting moment of experience of past and present.. 'I felt no need to embelish what I painted there on site. I felt that would dilute the expression of that ethereal experience of the place I viewed the 'human' of the place ( Archaeology etc) yet I wanted to capture a 'spirit ' rather than a recording of it Academically .
